Full time | Junior to Mid-Level | Reports to the Senior Manager, Underwriting


POSITION SUMMARY

Wealth One Bank of Canada (“WealthONE”) is hiring several Underwriters across varying levels of experience (Associate, Underwriter, and Senior Underwriter).

In these roles, you will be responsible for assessing and evaluating residential mortgage applications to determine borrower creditworthiness and overall risk. Scope, deal complexity, and decision-making authority will be aligned to the successful candidate’s level.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Core Underwriting Responsibilities (All Levels):

  • Review and analyze loan applications, financial statements, credit reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Assess borrower creditworthiness, repayment capacity, and collateral adequacy.
  • Evaluate risk and make recommendations in line with established underwriting guidelines.
  • Ensure all applications comply with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and lending standards.
  • Identify and escalate risks, inconsistencies, or missing information in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with relationship managers, brokers, and internal stakeholders to gather required information and move deals forward.
  • Maintain strong turnaround times and contribute to overall pipeline efficiency.

Advanced Responsibilities (Intermediate to Senior Levels):

  • Analyze more complex borrower profiles, including self-employed income, layered risk, and exception-based deals.
  • Structure transactions and propose solutions that balance risk and business objectives.
  • Present credit recommendations and rationale to senior stakeholders or credit committees, where applicable.
  • Monitor market trends and evolving lending practices to inform underwriting decisions.

 

REQUIREMENTS

Experience (aligned to level):

  • Associate Underwriter: 1–3 years of experience in mortgage underwriting or credit analysis.
  • Underwriter: 3–7 years of experience in residential mortgage underwriting.
  • Senior Underwriter: 7+ years of experience with demonstrated ability to handle complex deals and mentor others.

Education & Technical Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong understanding of residential mortgage lending, credit risk assessment, and underwriting principles.
  • Ability to analyze financial statements, income documentation, and credit reports.
  • Familiarity with underwriting systems and credit adjudication tools.
