About the Role
The Senior Accountant at Willow Lake Métis Nation is a key member of the finance team, responsible for ensuring financial practices align with internal policies, external regulations, and best-practice governance standards. This role will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, internal controls, risk management, and compliance. This position includes preparing and reviewing general ledger reconciliations and preparation of monthly financial statements which will support leadership in organizational decision-making. This position is hybrid with the option to work remotely 2 days per week and the remainder of the time onsite at our office in Anzac, AB. This is a full-time, permanent position at 72 hours bi-weekly, with every second Friday off.
Core Responsibilities
- Actively manage the day-to-day accounting operations
- Manage and process billing, accounts receivable and accounts payables functions.
- Prepare and review journal entries, general ledger reconciliations, and month-end closing activities
- Generate monthly, quarterly and annual reports to monitor, evaluate and optimize project and funding
- Maintain and reconcile balance sheet and income statement accounts
- Ensure accuracy of financial data, postings, and reports
- Support external audits by providing documentation and responding to auditor inquiries
- Assist in grant applications, specifically financial reporting and requirements
- Assist in developing budgets, forecasts, and financial models
- Enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Support system implementations and upgrades
- Manage personal and team time effectively to ensure that projects, reports and communications are completed on a timely basis
- Establish annual and quarterly priorities and benchmarks and conduct regular reporting, measuring projections against actual performance
- Build relationships with banks, vendors, outside consultants and others as needed
- Ensure that WLMN meets critical regulatory and legal compliance benchmarks
- Other duties as required
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- Minimum 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a senior or governance-focused role
- CPA designation is an asset
- Strong knowledge of internal controls, risk management, and compliance frameworks based on Canadian standards
- Experience with policy development and governance reporting is considered an asset
- Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Experience managing complex projects and cost accounting
- Leadership skills with personal integrity
Key Assets
- Knowledge of Métis traditions and ways of life, including hunting, trapping, fishing, and plant gathering
- Understanding of laws and regulations impacting the Métis people
Certificate/Training Requirements
Valid driver’s license required
