WellFort is seeking a Registered Dental Hygienist to join our Health n’ Smiles team!  Health n’ Smiles provides services to under resourced families living in the Region of Peel.


The Dental Hygienist provides preventative and hygiene services as an integral part of the overall treatment plan for a patient as discussed with the Dentist to promote/maintain dental/oral health.  The Hygienist will participate in assessment, development of a treatment plan, implementation of agreed plan and evaluation of the plan, making adjustments as required. The Hygienist will work closely with the Dentists and keep other members of the dental team informed of plan and activities as needed. Responsibilities include contributing to the overall running of the clinic, input into policy/protocol development and helping to maintain all clinic standards. 


Responsibilities

Direct Care: 

  • Completes periodontal assessment for each patient. 
  • Using current medical and dental health histories and periodontal examination, determines the state of periodontal health for each patient. 
  • Applies anesthetics as appropriate. 
  • Takes digital x-rays. 
  • Adheres to infection control standards and universal precautions at all times. 
  • Explains the recommended treatment to each patient, including cost, time involved, expected outcomes, benefit and possible side effects – makes adjustments as required. 
  • Maintains communication with the Dentist with regard to pertinent perio-clinical findings and to attain the best results for the patient. 
  • Provides clinical dental preventative services including: scaling, polishing, topical fluoride application, pit and fissure sealant placement, root planning and individual oral hygiene instruction. 
  • Evaluates the success or failure of the treatment plan and makes adjustments as required with consultation and agreement of the patient and attending Dentist. 
  • Works as part of an interdisciplinary team 

Health Promotion & Education: 

  • Identifies trends or issues related to the health status of priority groups and uses the information in planning and advocacy work. 
  • Actively participates in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion and education and support programs that are relevant and meaningful to the community served by WellFort at off-site locations, and in collaboration with community partners. 
  • Provides health information and counselling to individuals and groups through discussion, workshops/presentations, health fair displays, videos and the provision of written materials.  
  • Acts as a resource to WellFort staff and in partner/community organizations on specific and general issues in regards to injury prevention and chronic disease management.  
  • Promotes and increase awareness of health promotion activities with clients including risk assessment, lifestyle modifications, and assesses readiness for change.  

Advocacy and Community Development: 

  • Advocates for and with clients to reduce barriers to accessing health care and other services in the health centre and the broader community. 
  • Works with clients, especially those who traditionally experience barriers to access to ensure that they are treated with fairness and dignity.  
  • Participates in the development and support of public policies and strategies that have a positive influence on the determinants of health.  
  • Engages with the community to enhance its ability to function independently, to improve or protect the environment, and to support the development of healthy public policy and practice.  
  • Participates in community projects or WellFort activities to provide education, information or to develop collaborative strategies. 

Administration: 

  • Keeps equipment and instruments in good repair and reports equipment problems to supervisor. 
  • Responsible, in collaboration with all dental staff, for general cleanliness of clinic to provide a neat and tidy environment. 

Professional Development 

  • Conducts practice and maintains professional competence according to accepted standards of the CDHO. 
  • Maintains a member of good standing with the CDHO. 
  • Joins relevant professional groups to maintain professional linkages and support. 
  • Participates in Quality improvement programs and peer audit process as required.  
  • Participates in educational activities according to the needs of the centre and the career goals of the individual. 

Research: 

  • Participates in research when opportunities arise. 
  • Teaches oral hygiene to patients, is responsible, along with the Certified Dental Assistant and Dentist for patient education and prevention programs at WellFort. 

Other 

  • Other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time.  


Requirements

  • Registered in good standing with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario 
  • Diploma from an approved Dental Hygienist Program from a recognized College of Applied Arts and Technology  
  • Minimum one (1) year clinical experience required  
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written  
  • Demonstrated ability to teach clients and families 
  • Well-developed organization and planning skills  
  • Demonstrated flexibility and time management  
  • Excellent written communication and oral skills that meet the needs of the individual and/or community at the appropriate literacy level. 
  • Experience working with confidential and time sensitive documents and information. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to multi task in a fast paced environment. 
  • Experience working in a value based non-profit or social services organization. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and interdependently in an interdisciplinary team environment in which the skills and responsibilities of each team member are recognized and respected.   
  • Demonstrated proficiency in use of computers and various computer software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, database applications and Abeldent software an asset. 
  • Ability to speak languages relevant to the residents of the organization’s community is an asset.
