Interpretive Guide - Summer Student

Position Summary:

This position works closely with other staff to greet and assist guests and deliver programming rooted in Northern Plains Indigenous peoples’ cultures, histories, and teachings. With a focus on interpretive programming, customer service, and education, our Interpretive Guides are essential members of our team.

This position runs May - August, and is based on-site at the Visitor Centre.

Your duties and responsibilities include:

·         Welcome and inform visitors and guests of programs, exhibits, trails, and regulations.

·         Collect entry fees and track all visitors in the Point-of-Sale system.

·         Deliver meaningful and captivating in-person programming to a variety of demographics

·         Apply a variety of heritage presentation and interpretation techniques.

·         Adapt programs to meet specific audience needs and requirements.

·         Provide recommendations to enhance heritage presentations and interpretive programs.

·         Assist with maintaining the trails, visitor areas, and interactive exhibits.

·         Ensure excellence in the stewardship of all resources.

·         Assist in the development and delivery of engaging indoor and outdoor programming for all ages.

 

Requirements

·         Our ideal candidates are post-secondary students in Indigenous studies, education, hospitality, tourism, biology, archaeology, anthropology, or natural history.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of Northern Plains Indigenous cultures and traditions.

·         Previous experience in public speaking, storytelling, powwow dancing, jigging, fiddling, or drumming/singing.

·         Previous experience giving presentations, teaching, or delivering programming.

·         Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

·         Ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages and backgrounds.

·         Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

·         A suitable combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

·         Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.

·         An attitude that is creative, proactive, high energy, and driven.

·         Willingness to learn and a commitment to our goals and mission.

·         Experience with behavioural management techniques is considered an asset.

·         Previous experience teaching youth in a variety of settings is considered an asset.

·         Familiarity with the Saskatchewan Education Curriculum is considered an asset.

·         Valid first aid certification is considered an asset.

·         Fluency in additional languages is considered an asset.

 

Physical Requirements:

·         Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and uneven terrain.

·         Ability to walk, hike, and stand for long durations across grasslands, slopes, and undeveloped landscapes.

·         Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, kneeling, crouching, and carrying equipment or materials.

·         Ability to safely lift and carry moderate loads up to 50 pounds.

·         Ability to work independently in remote or semi-remote areas while maintaining situational awareness and following safety protocols.

·         Ability to work flexible or extended hours.


Additional Requirements:

·         A satisfactory criminal record check is required as a condition of employment.

·         Wanuskewin is located outside of Saskatoon city limits and public transportation is not available. Reliable personal transportation is required.

·         Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and present a satisfactory drivers abstract.
