Resource Management Technician

Position Summary:

The Resource Management Technician is a hands-on, high-impact role for someone who loves working outdoors, tackling real conservation challenges, and seeing the results of their efforts on the land. The position is rooted in field-based work all in service of caring for and protecting an important landscape. The work can be physically demanding, but it’s also engaging, meaningful, and genuinely fun. This role offers the opportunity to support long-term stewardship, respect Indigenous knowledge and heritage, and help safeguard the ecological integrity of a culturally and ecologically significant land for future generations.

Term: May 4 to Aug 28, 2026

Your duties and responsibilities include:

  • Management of invasive species, including surveying, monitoring, controlling and removing undesirable species (manual, mechanical, biological, chemical and/or controlled burns)
  • Oversight and involvement in long-term environmental monitoring programs for the property including upland and aquatic habitats (e.g., health assessments, plant and soil surveys)
  • Collect field data and update Wanuskewin’s Resource Management geodatabase
  • Digitize resource management data.
  • Identify and inventory plant species within the Park, including current and future state desired and undesired species.
  • Guide and supervise the work of other staff or consultants/visitors/volunteers undertaking ecological monitoring, inventory projects, volunteer events, or uncommon management practices.
  • Assist with, and take responsibility for maintenance of equipment required by the Resource Management Department.
  • Advise any future on-site or adjacent development plans, to ensure compatibility with ecological or heritage sensitivities.
  • Assist in study design, data collection, and analysis for various monitoring and resource management projects.
  • Adapt and update the RMP to include any new developments that may threaten ecological integrity within Wanuskewin.
  • Keep up to date with restoration/conservation/resource management science and best practices.
  • Complying with all external and internal safety practices and requirements; ensuring safety is a top priority in all aspects of the role.

Requirements

  • Education in the fields of biology, environmental science, renewable resource management, or related natural sciences.
  • A minimum one year of relevant experience in land management, or adequate experience in related fields (fieldwork, coursework, volunteering).
  • Strong plant and animal identification skills, as well as familiarity with common native and invasive species.
  • Assets include experience with Geographic Information Systems, experience operating small farm machinery, knowledge of native grassland restoration methodologies and riparian health assessments, pesticide application license, various environmental designations, experience and comfort with teaching and public speaking, and knowledge of Indigenous Plains culture.

·         Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

·         A suitable combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

·         Ability to work independently and as part of a team.  

Physical Requirements:

·         Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, rain, and uneven terrain

·         Ability to walk, hike, and stand for long durations across grasslands, riparian areas, slopes, and undeveloped landscapes

·         Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting, digging, pulling, cutting, and carrying equipment or materials

·         Ability to safely lift and carry moderate loads (e.g., tools, monitoring equipment, vegetation, or supplies)

·         Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and small machinery associated with land and resource management

·         Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks related to invasive species control, monitoring, and site maintenance

·         Ability to work independently in remote or semi-remote areas while maintaining situational awareness and following safety protocols

·         Ability to work flexible or extended hours, including early mornings or longer field days as required by seasonal conditions

Additional Requirements:

·         A satisfactory criminal record check is required as a condition of employment.

·         Wanuskewin is located outside of Saskatoon city limits and public transportation is not available. Reliable personal transportation is required.

·         Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license and present a satisfactory drivers abstract.
