OT Volunteer | Role Description

Overview

The OT Volunteer role supports the delivery of Occupational Therapy group programs while providing structured exposure to pediatric OT practice. The role contributes to program execution through logistical support, material preparation, and in-session assistance, while observing clinical practice in a defined and supervised capacity.

This is a non-clinical, execution-focused role with clearly defined boundaries. It is intended for students or individuals seeking volunteer hours, educational experience, or introductory exposure to occupational therapy or related helping professions.

Compensation band: Unpaid

Core purpose

To support the effective and organized delivery of OT group programs while enabling safe, structured observational exposure to pediatric occupational therapy practice.

Key responsibilities

Administrative requirements

  • Completes and maintains all required documentation prior to and throughout the volunteer term, including a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)

Training and onboarding

  • Completes required onboarding and orientation
  • Observes a defined number of 1:1 OT sessions at Red Oak prior to participating in group programming

OT group programming

  • Supports OT-led group sessions under the direction of the supervising OT
  • Assists with set-up, transitions, activity support, and clean-up
  • Contributes to maintaining structure, flow, and engagement within the group

Materials preparation and organization

  • Prepares, organizes, and maintains materials required for group sessions
  • Supports creation of resources such as games, crafts, visual supports, and sensory materials as directed

Observation and shadowing

  • Observes OT-led sessions to build understanding of clinical reasoning, therapeutic approaches, and engagement strategies
  • Maintains an active learning stance while adhering to role boundaries

Professional conduct and readiness

  • Arrives prepared and on time for all scheduled shifts
  • Follows direction from supervising clinicians
  • Maintains professionalism, confidentiality, and appropriate boundaries with children, families, and staff

Role boundaries and escalation

OT Volunteers do not provide clinical intervention, assessment, therapeutic input, or parent consultation. Volunteers do not work independently with children.

All questions, concerns, or incidents must be escalated immediately to the supervising Occupational Therapist or Clinical Coordinator.

Working parameters

Expected availability and hours

Attendance at all assigned group sessions, including arrival 15 minutes prior for set-up and remaining after for clean-up.

Role success metrics

  • Demonstrates reliable attendance and punctuality across all scheduled sessions.
  • Commitment to attending all scheduled volunteer dates (required). Absences may impact eligibility for a volunteer certificate. If an urgent situation arises, notify the Clinical Coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Follows direction effectively and contributes to a well-organized, positive group environment.
  • Prepares and manages materials in a way that supports efficient session delivery.
  • Maintains professionalism, curiosity, and adherence to defined role boundaries.
