Swift Underground specializes in utility infrastructure construction and is based in Steinbach, Manitoba. We use industry-leading equipment and technologies to construct and install fibre optic cabling and conduit, sewer and water infrastructure, and geothermal ground loops across Western Canada and Ontario.

 

Position Summary:

The Hydrovac Technician is a hands-on field role responsible for safely exposing underground utilities and completing non-destructive excavation work using hydrovac trucks in support of telecommunications, sewer and water, geothermal, and other underground infrastructure projects.

This role supports our construction crews by assisting with the daylighting and potholing of existing underground utilities, providing trenching support, performing debris removal, and operating, inspecting, and maintaining hydrovac trucks and related equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

This position requires the ability to travel for out-of-town projects across Western Canada and Ontario. Tools and specialized equipment are provided.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist with loading, unloading, and securing hoses, tools, equipment, and materials required for daily hydrovac operations.
  • Set up and maintain work site traffic control and other safety measures in accordance with site requirements, utility locates, and company procedures.
  • Perform daylighting and potholing to safely locate and expose underground infrastructure.
  • Operate hydrovac trucks and related equipment safely and efficiently under the direction of qualified operators.
  • Complete excavation support tasks such as debris removal, spoil management, slot trenching, and assisting other construction crews with safe access to underground facilities.
  • Complete daily inspections, basic maintenance, cleaning, and documentation for assigned hydrovac trucks and equipment, and report defects promptly.
  • Work scheduled shifts, including overtime and variable hours, based on project, weather, and operational needs.
  • Emergency call-out shifts may be required after-hours and includes a premium rate.
  • Must be able to travel and work on out-of-town projects.

 

Position Qualifications:

  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in variable weather conditions and physically demanding environments, including lifting and pulling hoses and working around excavation sites.
  • Commitment to following all company policies, procedures, utility locate requirements, and safety practices, with a strong focus on damage prevention and safe excavation.
  • Able to communicate professionally with customers, supervisors, co-workers, and other crews on active job sites.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and specialized hydrovac or construction equipment safely and effectively.
  • Responsible and safety-focused operation of company vehicles and equipment, with the ability to complete inspections, identify issues, and maintain a clean and organized unit.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required. Possession of, or willingness to obtain, a Class 3 license with Air Brakes is considered a strong asset.
  • Previous hydrovac, vacuum truck, or utility construction experience is considered an asset.

 

Compensation:

Beginning wage of $25-$38/hr based on experience.

Daily per diem and company paid lodgings provided for eligible out-of-town projects (amount and eligibility based on project specifications and company policy).

Wage increases and advancement opportunities are available based on performance and skill development.
