Swift Underground specializes in utility infrastructure construction and is based in Steinbach, Manitoba. We use industry-leading equipment and technologies to construct and install fibre optic cabling and conduit, sewer and water infrastructure, and geothermal ground loops across Western Canada and Ontario.
Position Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic position is a hands-on role responsible for maintaining, repairing, and outfitting our heavy construction fleet. Included in this fleet is a wide array of heavy equipment (e.g. horizontal drills, excavators, vibratory plows), large diesel trucks, hydrovac trucks, trailers, and passenger trucks & SUVs.
Key responsibilities include heavy equipment repair and maintenance, upgrading equipment, preparing equipment for out-of-town work, repairs required for safeties, and retrofitting new equipment for our specific uses. This position will join our current crew of Construction Mechanics.
Mechanics must provide their own basic tools required for the role. Specialized tools and equipment will be provided and maintained by Swift. Some out-of-town work is required.

Essential Job Functions:
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on heavy equipment, trucks, and support vehicles (e.g., oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and inspections).
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using appropriate diagnostic tools, and technical manuals.
- Repair and replace components and systems, including (as required) engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brakes, and undercarriage components.
- Complete preventative maintenance and comprehensive inspections to identify potential issues before they become major problems, minimizing downtime.
- Prepare, outfit, and retrofit equipment for Swift’s specific applications and for out-of-town projects (e.g., attachments, mounts, lighting, and other job-specific modifications).
- Support field operations by responding to breakdowns and completing repairs at job sites, both local and out-of-town, when required.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs, including work performed and parts used. Communicate findings, recommendations, and equipment status to supervisors and operators.
- Work safely at all times by following company policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout and other safety protocols, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
Position Qualifications:
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license required; possession of, or willingness to obtain, a Class 3 license with Air Brakes is considered a strong asset.
- Basic knowledge of systems and components found in heavy construction equipment and vehicles, and familiarity with hand and power tools commonly used in equipment maintenance and repair.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues; ability to interpret service manuals, schematics, and diagrams.
- Commitment to following all company policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with operators and team members; able to report findings clearly and professionally.
- Able to prioritize and manage multiple repair tasks, maintain accurate records, and keep a clean and organized work area.
- Ability to work effectively in physically demanding environments and variable weather conditions, including occasional field work and out-of-town travel.
- Apprenticeship or Journeyperson certification considered a strong asset.
Compensation:
Salary range of $25-$45/hr based on role, experience and/or certifications.

Daily per diem and company paid lodgings provided for eligible out-of-town projects (amount and eligibility based on project specifications and company policy).
Wage increases and advancement opportunities are available based on performance, skill development, and progression within the drilling program.
