Apprentice Sprinkler Systems Installer

Who You Are

To excel as an Apprentice Sprinkler Systems Installer, you'll need a combination of technical skills, soft skills, and a strong work ethic. Here are the required skills and attributes for success in this role:

Commitment to Learning: Approach the apprenticeship with a strong desire to learn and improve your skills. Be receptive to feedback and continually seek opportunities for growth. Attend classroom instruction within each of the first 3 years, with the intention of completing your Journeyperson Certification. 

Attitude: The single most important trait of any Sterling Fire Protection staff member is their attitude. A positive attitude with an ability to stay positive and productive through dynamic (and sometimes frustrating) situations is absolutely necessary and required of all staff.

Mechanical Aptitude: You should have a natural aptitude for understanding mechanical systems and how they work. This includes the ability to use hand and power tools effectively.

Blueprint Reading: Being able to interpret construction blueprints and design drawings is crucial for understanding the layout and installation requirements of sprinkler systems.

Basic Pipefitting Skills: Familiarity with pipefitting concepts, such as pipe cutting, threading, and joining, is essential for assembling and connecting sprinkler system components.

Safety Knowledge: A strong commitment to safety is paramount in this role. You must understand and adhere to safety regulations, protocols, and best practices to prevent accidents and ensure a safe work environment.

Problem-Solving: The ability to identify issues or malfunctions in sprinkler systems and troubleshoot problems effectively is vital. Problem-solving skills are essential for making repairs and adjustments.

Hand-Eye Coordination: Precise hand-eye coordination is needed for tasks like threading pipes, installing sprinkler heads, and connecting components accurately.

Tools and Equipment: Familiarity with various tools and equipment used in the installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems, including wrenches, saws, drills, and welding equipment, is beneficial.

Communication: Good verbal communication skills and fluency in English are important for working effectively in a team, interacting with clients, and following instructions from experienced installers.

Teamwork: You'll often work as part of a team, so being a cooperative team player is essential to ensure that installations are completed efficiently and safely.

Attention to Detail: Precision is crucial in this role. You must pay close attention to details when assembling components and following blueprints to ensure the system's accuracy and reliability.

Adaptability: Construction environments can be unpredictable. Being adaptable and able to work in various weather conditions and at different job sites is essential.

Time Management: Efficiently managing your time and tasks is important for meeting project deadlines and ensuring that installations are completed on schedule.

Physical Stamina: Sprinkler system installers often work in physically demanding environments, requiring the ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders, and stand for extended periods.

Punctuality: Being punctual is crucial in construction jobs to start work on time and meet project schedules.

Reliability: Employers and colleagues should be able to depend on you to complete tasks safely and effectively.

Professionalism: Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with clients, contractors, and colleagues, and adhere to the company's code of conduct.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in System Installation: Work under the supervision of experienced installers to set up, install, and test fire sprinkler systems, including pipes, valves, pumps, and other components.
  • Read Blueprints: Learn to read and interpret construction blueprints and design drawings to determine the layout and placement of sprinkler system components.
  • Material Handling: Assist in the transportation and handling of materials, tools, and equipment required for sprinkler system installation.
  • Pipe Cutting and Grooving: Gain proficiency in cutting and threading pipes, as well as grooving to connect and secure sprinkler system components. 
  • Assembly and Testing: Assist in assembling and testing sprinkler heads, alarms, and control systems to ensure they function correctly and meet safety standards. 
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and your colleagues. 
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records and documentation related to installation activities and any modifications made to the system.
  • Learning and Development: Attend training sessions and courses to improve your knowledge of fire sprinkler systems, codes, and regulations.
  • Customer Interaction: Interact with clients, contractors, and other team members professionally and courteously.
  • Troubleshooting: Learn to identify and resolve issues with sprinkler systems and make necessary repairs or adjustments.
  • Complete timecard submissions. Complete accurate timecard entries throughout the day and submit complete time cards weekly on time.
  • Represent Sterling Fire with clients. Ensure Sterling Fire’s interests are always being represented while communicating with clients and while on site.
  • Appearance. Technicians are required to ensure they are representing Sterling Fire appropriately with their appearance. Professional clothes/company uniform and a neat appearance are requirements of the job.

What You Need

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Willingness to work in various weather conditions and at different job sites.
  • A basic understanding of construction and safety practices is a plus.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to lift heavy objects.
  • Valid driver’s license with regular access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle - A clean driver’s abstract is required.

Salary

  • $23.00/hr - $45.00/hr depending on experience
