Position Overview

The Retail Greenhouse Lead Waterer, reporting to the Retail Greenhouse Team Lead, is responsible for maintaining the highest standards of plant health, quality, and presentation within the Retail Greenhouse. In addition to plant care responsibilities, this role also includes sales and customer relations. This role is hands-on and detail-oriented, ensuring all plant material receives proper daily care through systematic watering, pest scouting, transplanting, and proactive problem prevention. The Lead Waterer plays a key role in minimizing plant loss, supporting sales through exceptional plant quality, and contributing to a positive team culture.

Type: Seasonal, Full-Time
Schedule: 30-40 Hours/Week; seasonal overtime as required
Location: Shelmerdine Garden Centre Ltd. (Must have own transportation—no bus service available)

What You’ll Be Doing

Plant Health & Quality Control

• Conduct daily watering of all plant material using flood tables and hose systems.
• Walk the greenhouse floor daily to assess plant health and prioritize watering and care needs.
• Scout for pests, disease, and quality concerns; communicate issues promptly to the Retail Greenhouse Team Lead
• Transplant plant material when necessary to support optimal growth and presentation.
• Proactively address plant health issues to reduce shrink and write-offs
• Maintain detailed watering logs to ensure continuity of care on days off.
• Ensure greenhouse presentation remains clean, organized, and retail-ready at all times.

Greenhouse Operations Support

• Provide input on product performance and purchasing decisions based on plant quality observations.
• Support staff training in proper watering techniques, plant care standards, and customer service awareness.
• Promote a positive, team-oriented culture within the greenhouse department.

• Retail experience preferred.
• Positive, hardworking, and team-oriented attitude.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.
• Interest in plants and willingness to learn (horticultural knowledge is an asset but not required)
• Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced greenhouse environment.
• Availability for evenings and weekends.
• Physically capable of lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
