The Engineering Team Lead role exists to provide focused leadership within a specific area of the engineering organization. This role bridges the gap between individual contributors and senior engineering leadership, with a blend of technical execution, team management, and functional ownership. 

Role Responsibilities 

Technical Execution & Delivery 

The Team Lead ensures that work is delivered consistently, on time, and with quality. They are expected to be technically hands-on and a player-coach; contributing to code reviews, architecture discussions, and even active development.  

This includes managing  and communicating the team’s backlog, partnering with Product Management to prioritize incoming work, and ensuring follow-through on all deliverables. 

They are directly accountable for the success of their functional area, including: 

• Creating visibility into team progress, blockers, and impact and proactively communicating progress 
• Driving outcomes and continuous improvement within their area of responsibility 
• Owning the performance, reliability, and delivery of their team’s software  
• Ensuring that deliverables meet organizational standards such as for security, usability and API guidelines 
• Ensuring customer issues are triaged, prioritized, and resolved effectively 
• Collaborating with other leads and stakeholders to align on goals and resourcing 

Functional Ownership 

The Team Lead owns the ongoing operation and maintenance of all software their team has delivered or taken ownership over. This includes managing release processes, ensuring adequate on-call coverage for their systems, and the ongoing creation and maintenance of runbooks and automation. The Team Lead also works closely with platform engineering to ensure costs are controlled and that adequate telemetry, monitoring and alerting exist for their deliverables.  

The role acts as the main point of contact for any cross-functional collaboration related to this area (e.g. customer support, product management, QA). 

Team Leadership & People Management 

This role includes direct people management. The Team Lead supports a small group of engineers (typically 3–5 direct reports) by: 

• Holding regular 1:1s 
• Providing day-to-day coaching and guidance 
• Supporting career development and leveling up technical skills and thinking of their team 
• Facilitating performance conversations and feedback 

Communication & Culture Building 

The Team Lead communicates priorities, progress, and blockers to the broader org. They help foster a team environment grounded in RocketRez values: ownership, humility, presence, and continuous improvement. They are a first point of escalation and help drive resolution both within the team and across departments.
