POSITION DESCRIPTION

Title: Manager, Animal Care

Reporting to: Director, Animal Health

Status: Full Time, Permanent

Salary Range: $62,000-$66,000 annual salary


POSITION SUMMARY

This is a new position.

Reporting to the Director of Animal Health, the Manager, Animal Care is responsible for the day-to-day operational effectiveness of our animal shelter. The Manager, Animal Care directly manages the animal care staff responsible for the day-to-day care of the animals under the PHS umbrella. The ideal candidate for this position will be a leader by nature, and be highly motivated to make a positive difference in animal wellness at PHS. The successful candidate must have a keen sense of shelter leadership, animal health,  management, and have the ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with staff, volunteers, and the community. 


Work Environment

  • Open-admission, not-for-profit animal shelter, including handling of a variety of domesticated and stray animals
  • Combination of administrative responsibilities and on-the-floor supervision
  • Regular hours of work are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
  • May require occasional evening and weekend work to support shelter activities
  • A collaborative, supportive, team-based workplace


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Shelter Operations

  • Develop objectives and plans with department and program managers and assist in developing PHS initiatives and programs 
  • Conduct strategic workforce planning to design a departmental structure that optimizes resources, efficiencies, and productivity and supports staff. Regularly assesses departmental structure for improvement opportunities 
  • Evaluate and report on the impact of the organization’s shelter programs and initiatives
  • Work in compliance with all centre policies and procedures
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Advocate for, and continuously embody the Mission, Vision, and Values of the Peterborough Humane Society


Supervisory

  • Provide leadership to direct reports by overseeing their performance, providing guidance, training, and support, identifying development needs, and managing relationships
  • Ensure that staff are properly trained in animal care procedures and safety protocols
  • Provide direct reports continual feedback on performance with the objective of constant improvement
  • Schedule animal care attendant staff to ensure consistent and effective coverage
  • Ensure staff and volunteers observe general and occupational safety and ensure a safe work environment
  • Foster a culture of compassion, accountability, and teamwork
  • Coordinate with supervisors to ensure proper workforce planning


Administration

  • Collaborate with animal health team to develop and execute animal care policies and procedures in line with industry standards and best practices
  • Manage the allocation of resources, including staffing, equipment, and supplies
  • Support partnerships with municipal & provincial animal welfare agencies 
  • Prepare regular reports on shelter operations and animal care for senior management 


Leadership 

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for animal care, including setting goals, budgets, and performance metrics
  • Ensure best practices in animal welfare management are adhered to at all times through collaboration with department leads
  • Handle emergencies and crisis situations and implement response plans


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years progressive experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity, preferably in an animal shelter environment
  • In-depth knowledge of animal welfare best practices 
  • Experience within not-for-profit operations would be considered an asset   
  • Proven ability to manage change and lead teams, departments and groups 
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, with superior organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, PetPoint and other digital platforms
  • Ability to maintain professional composure and a positive attitude in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to prioritize and manage conflicting demands
  • Comfortable being around domestic animals and knowledge of animal care/responsible pet ownership 
  • Demonstrated passion for and commitment to helping animals
  • Ability to work well both independently as well as in a group setting  
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract and access to a vehicle
  • Registered Veterinary Technician, or Veterinary Technician would be considered an asset 
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, including but not limited to: 
    • The ability to handle and manoeuvre up to 50 lbs
    • The ability to stay on feet for extended periods of time
    • The ability to operate with full range of motion (i.e., crouching, kneeling, reaching, etc.)
    • No known animal or animal husbandry related allergies
