UNION: SIU – Dock / Stock

SALARY: $24.60 per hour


The Dock Person is responsible for performing daily tasks for the efficient and effective operation of the Tobermory Terminal location. The incumbent works closely with terminal Ticket Agents to ensure smooth, effective, safe, and efficient vehicular traffic and loading vessel coordination.

The Dock Person performs general maintenance and related work as assigned on buildings, terminal property, ramps, and docks. Duties include traffic management, passenger assistance, vessel mooring, equipment operation and maintenance, freight handling, landscaping, building sanitation and maintenance, operating vehicle transfer bridges, and assisting passengers boarding and departing the vessel.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The primary job duties and responsibilities of the Dock Person include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintaining safe and clean access to and from the vessel for passengers and vehicles to the terminal, terminal grounds, and property maintenance.
  • Maintain strict compliance with all safety regulations regarding procedures and equipment as outlined in company policies and procedures.
  • Perform maintenance tasks to equipment and assets.
  • Perform daily, weekly, or monthly checks of the terminal or equipment as directed.
  • Receive and sort traffic, measure, tag, and complete necessary forms for processing, including dangerous goods identification.
  • Marshaling vehicles in loading and standby zones as instructed by the Ticket Agent.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient processing of vehicles.
  • Assisting and directing passengers during loading and unloading, including those who may require extra assistance as directed.
  • Direct vehicles for loading onto the vessel, as directed by the First Mate.
  • Daily cleaning of the terminal building including washrooms, foyer, kitchen and ticket booths.
  • Securing and casting off the vessel as directed.
  • Engaging/disengaging the passenger ramp and raising/lowering the vehicle transfer bridge as directed.
  • Perform lawn and landscaping maintenance, including grass cutting, weed eating, hedge trimming and flower bed maintenance.
  • Participate in drills, emergency response plan duties, oil response duties, and health and safety meetings as directed.
  • Report unsafe conditions or environmental hazards.
  • Greasing passenger and vehicle ramp according to schedule.
  • Complete weekly accessibility checks and generator checks.
  • Complete monthly Health and Safety checks of the buildings and grounds.
  • Deliver freight to ship when required.
  • Raising and lower of flags, ground checks and parking lots.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, WORK EXPERIENCE, and SKILLS

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Able to operate equipment (golf cart).
  • Complete Working from Heights Certification.
  • Complete and maintain the Basic First Aid Course, is preferred.
  • Oil Spill Response.
  • Complete Fire Extinguisher Safety.
  • Valid G Drivers licence, preferred.
  • Have a Valid Pleasure Craft Operators Licence, preferred.
  • Experience directing traffic is an asset.
  • Marine Sector experience an asset.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer experience and efficiently address customer concerns.

EFFORT – PHYSICAL/SENSORY DEMANDS

  • Lift and pack merchandise up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to see 100’ with good depth perception for catching mooring lines.
  • Pull heavy cables up to 50 feet.
  • Stand consistently for 2 hours.
  • Walk long distances (500 meters).
  • Able to climb a flight of stairs.
  • Ability to climb a 12’ ladder.
  • Able to read 12 pt font on manifests.
  • Fast-paced environment.
  • Able to hear and respond on two-way radios.
  • Ability to communicate in person and over the phone.
  • Ability to read printed materials and a computer screen.
