Position: Bareroot & Budding Assistant Supervisor

Reports to: BR/Budding Supervisor

Classification: Full Time Seasonal

Role Objective:

  1. To support the department supervisor in managing the field tree liner production, ensuring healthy, uniform, and market-ready trees through effective planning, crew supervision, and implementation of best horticultural practices, while maintaining safety, productivity, and quality standards across all growing operations.
  2. To assist the department supervisor in supervising the field budding crew in the accurate and efficient execution of tree budding operations, ensuring high success rates, plant health, and adherence to nursery standards, while maintaining safety, productivity, and proper training of all crew members.

General Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized department
  • Collaborate with the Plant Health Team to scout, diagnose, and treat any plant or pest related issues that arise.
  • Assist with training department employees. 
  • Assist with delegating and completing plant maintenance, including grow straights, tying, pruning, staking, etc.
  • Acting supervisor when Supervisor is absent.  



Specific Responsibilities: BR Assistant Supervisor

  • Accurately pull and assemble live plant orders based on packing slips, customer invoices, or digital order systems.
  • Ensure correct plant varieties, quantities, and sizes are selected according to customer orders and quality standards.
  • Inspect plants for pests, disease, or damage before shipping.
  • Label orders clearly and accurately; and stage completed orders in designated areas for shipping, or pickup.
  • Monitor and manage leftover orders and restock plant material.
  • Communicate with the shipping and sales teams regarding add-ons, shortages, damages, or order discrepancies.
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining digital inventory of all plant material.
  • Assist in bareroot barn set up, maintenance, and organization.
  • Unload and organize incoming bareroot material
  • Assist in pruning and loading of bareroot material for field planting.
  • Cut, process, and assemble live stake and waddle orders.
  • Assist with grafting production (one month in the winter)


Specific Responsibilities: Budding/Field Seedling Assistant Supervisor

  • Assist in maintaining and monitoring budding and seeding blocks, weekly
  • Spraying necessary pesticides in field and container production.
  • Assist with planting fields of budding understock and seedlings
  • Assist with collecting bud wood.
  • Assist in maintenance of landscape trees, bushlines, etc. on NVK’s properties. 
  • Budding field production.
  • Apply paint codes on all field trees.
  • Supervisor responsibilities when Supervisor is absent.


Required Certifications:

  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License
  • Tree ID skills
