The National Judicial Institute (NJI) is an independent, bilingual, not‐for‐profit organization, based in Ottawa and Montreal, with a mandate to provide continuing education to members of the judiciary across Canada. An acknowledged world leader in the design and delivery of judicial education, the NJI also shares its judicial training expertise abroad. In its international work, the NJI seeks to strengthen the rule of law through judicial education and judicial reform.
Since its inception in 1988, the NJI has offered in-person programs and a wide range of digital resources designed to foster judicial excellence. As part of its curriculum, the NJI delivers over 70 in-person judicial education programs each year. The NJI’s digital resources include self-study courses, Electronic Bench Books, podcasts, videos, judge-facing tools, and more. Alone or in partnership with courts and other organizations, the NJI is involved in the delivery of the majority of education provided to judges in Canada.
The NJI is looking to fill the permanent position of Assistant Director, In-Person Education based in Ottawa.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Director, In-Person Education and Evaluation (Director), the Assistant Director, In-Person Education plays a leadership role within the NJI’s In-Person Education department. The Assistant Director works to ensure timely, relevant, and high-quality in-person education program development and delivery at the NJI.
The Assistant Director works closely with the Director and the department’s Senior Program Manager to oversee the NJI’s overall portfolio of in-person judicial education programs. The Assistant Director is primarily responsible for managing the department’s team of eight Counsel, In-Person Education, whose role consists of designing, planning, and overseeing the successful delivery of individual in-person education programs for Canadian judges. The Assistant Director plays a significant role in assisting with the management of department operations, including setting program assignments for counsel, ensuring in-person programs are designed consistently with adult education principles, and developing and implementing department policies and procedures. In addition to supporting the Director with the leadership of the In-Person Education department, including strategic planning, the Assistant Director helps to fulfill departmental reporting requirements to the NJI’s Senior Management Committee and Board of Governors and contributes to the development of effective relationships with other judicial education stakeholders such as the Canadian Judicial Council, the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs, the Canadian Council of Chief Judges, the Canadian Superior Courts Judges Association, the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges, and the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice. The Assistant Director also serves as Counsel, In-Person Education on several domestic education programs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential
- Law School Degree (LLB, JD);
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in a managerial role, directly supervising employees;
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in the design and delivery of adult or professional education curriculum and innovative education programming;
- Experience in leading projects, including the ability to plan, organize, prioritize, collaborate with other teams, be flexible and creative to balance multiple ongoing projects and meet tight timelines;
- Experience working with professional or community organizations (i.e. law firm, government, universities, public legal education, not-for-profit, community organization);
- Fluent in English (R/W/O);
- Ability to travel frequently overnight within Canada;
- Proficiency with Office 365; and
- Membership at the Bar.
Desirable
- LL.M or other postgraduate degree;
- Experience in teaching law at university;
- Experience in distance education programming and resources;
- Experience in working in a non-profit organization;
- Bijural (common law/civil law) knowledge;
- Fluent in French (R/W/O); and
- Proficiency in Project Management Software, such as Asana.
COMPENSATION
Compensation is to be determined at the time of hiring, based on the successful candidate’s experience and profile, within unrepresented salary band 8: $113,116 to $141,394 annually.
