Your Role
We are looking for a Senior Writer (Aspiring Editor) who can handle a wide range of content—from news and AI updates to lifestyle features and evergreen articles—while managing freelancers, shaping news strategies, and leading content production for MTL Blog. To excel in this role, you need to breathe Montreal, with a deep understanding of the city’s culture, hotspots, and local pulse. Your insight into what matters to Montrealers will help you craft engaging stories and drive content initiatives that truly reflect the city’s unique character.
Your Responsibilities
- Content Creation: Write a variety of articles about Montreal, from breaking news to evergreen content, while ensuring high editorial standards.
- Freelance Management: Lead and manage a pool of regular and ad-hoc freelance writers, ensuring smooth communication and meeting content output goals.
- Editing: Edit both freelance and staff content for Narcity English and MTL Blog, ensuring consistency in grammar, style, and accuracy. Step in for editing during vacations or high-volume periods.
- Strategic Development: Collaborate with the Managing Editor and freelancers to build an effective news and content strategy tailored for Montreal. Be involved in content brainstorming sessions.
- Freelancer Support: Provide ongoing feedback, guidance, and support to freelancers, ensuring they produce top-quality work. Conduct regular check-ins and monitor their progress, while keeping them updated on editorial processes and best practices.
- Content Quality Oversight: Ensure that all freelance content meets Narcity’s editorial standards and adheres to legal guidelines where applicable.
- Invoice Management: Review and approve freelance invoices, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
- Brand Ambassador: Represent Narcity’s values internally and externally, maintaining a positive and adaptable attitude as the company grows and evolves.
Your Qualifications
- Experience: Proven experience in editorial roles with a focus on both fast-paced news writing and evergreen content. Experience working with freelancers.
- Leadership: Strong leadership skills with the ability to independently drive projects and manage freelance teams. Strategic mindset to understand market needs.
- Adaptability: Ability to switch seamlessly between writing, editing, and team management. Skilled at working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. French is a strong asset.
- Tech-Savvy: Proficient with content management systems and digital media tools.
- Attention to Detail: A strong eye for detail to ensure quality control in grammar, style, and citation.
- Education: Post-secondary education in journalism or related fields is preferred but not required.

Position Details
- Location: Montreal (remote with occasional in-person events or collaborations).
- Compensation: Commensurate with experience, with a range of CAD $65,000 – $75,000 annually
