Role: Laboratory Technician

Location: Toronto, ON


Job Description:

Mediphage Bioceuticals is recruiting a Laboratory Technician to work jointly with the science team to execute research and development projects. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Research and Development, the candidate will conduct experimental techniques in microbiology, cell and molecular biology, and general chemistry to support the growth of Mediphage Bioceuticals. This will be a 12 month contract with the possibility of extension.


Essential Functions and Duties:

● Carrying out microbiological cultivation techniques including pipetting, plasmid extraction, PCR, gel electrphoresis, sampling and aliquoting

● Preparing culture media in large scales

● Gather and prepare samples, such as bacterial cultures and human cell culture, for laboratory analysis

● Prepare and sterilize media according to manufacturer standards and/ or related SOP

● Prepare chemical reagents and biomedical media according to formulae and assume responsibility for accuracy in the preparation and standardization of solutions

● Perform various in-vitro procedures that are moderately complex and specialized, and daily quality control checks

● Assist with lab equipment maintenance, instrument calibration and qualification, and routine monitoring of critical instruments

● Observe details and maintain accurate records of experiments and results

● Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and chemicals

● Organize and monitor the inventory of lab supplies

● Assist in the preparation of data for reports and publications

● Instruct and enforce compliance with established safe work practices and procedures to promote and maintain safe working conditions

● Responsible for lab clean up, washing dishes and autoclaving and demonstrate good sterile/aseptic techniques in the lab

● Input, maintain, and verify information in a variety of databases and spreadsheets


Skills and Experience:

● College diploma in a science technology program or a bachelor’s degree in science, chemistry or a related field

● Aptitude for multi-tasking and working effectively in a fast-paced environment

● Excellent organizational skills and pays meticulous attention to detail

● Ability to problem solve and work independently after training

● Strong computer skills

● Strong written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills

● Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced, team environment

● Demonstrate ability to follow sterile/ aseptic techniques in the lab

● Must have Good Documentation Practices

● Flexible schedule


Assets:

● Experience in human cell culture and molecular biology techniques

● Familiarity with BSL-2 protocols and waste handling

● The position will also involve pre-analysis sample preparation, routine and non- routine

chemical analysis of a wide variety of sample types

● An understanding of laboratory QA/QC and electronic data handling

● Prior experience in an academic or industry research laboratory

● Microscope skills are a plus
