The Lower Nicola Indian Band (LNIB) is a proud Nlaka’pamux Nation community located near Merritt, British Columbia. LNIB is committed to supporting the wellbeing of its members through strong governance, cultural preservation, economic development, and community services.

LNIB provides a wide range of programs and services that support community members, including housing, lands management, infrastructure, recreation, cultural programming, administration, and social services. The Band is dedicated to creating opportunities that empower youth, strengthen community connections, and promote cultural knowledge.

Through the Summer Student Program, LNIB aims to provide students with meaningful employment experience while encouraging professional development and community engagement.

 

Position Overview

The Lower Nicola Indian Band is seeking three Summer Students to support departmental operations during the Summer 2026 season.

This program offers students the opportunity to develop workplace skills, gain hands-on experience, and contribute to projects that benefit the community.

Students applying will have the opportunity to indicate which department they are most interested in working with:


·         Culture & Recreation

·         Administration

·         Public Works

 

Depending on operational needs, students may also support activities across multiple departments.

 

Department Opportunities

 

Culture & Recreation

The Culture & Recreation Department works to strengthen community connection through cultural programming, youth activities, and community events. The department supports initiatives that promote Nlaka’pamux culture, health, wellness, and recreation for all ages.

 

Summer Students may assist with:

 

·         Supporting cultural programming and community events

·         Helping coordinate recreational activities and youth programming

·         Assisting with event setup, preparation, and cleanup

·         Engaging with community members during programs and events

·         Organizing materials and equipment for activities

·         Supporting cultural learning opportunities and community gatherings

 

This position is ideal for students who enjoy working with people, youth programming, and community events.

 

Administration

The Administration Department supports the day-to-day operations of the Lower Nicola Indian Band. Administrative staff work closely with leadership and other departments to ensure programs, services, and communications are organized and effective.

 

Summer students may assist with:

 

·         Filing, scanning, and organizing documents

·         Data entry and record management

·         Supporting reception or general office tasks

·         Assisting with correspondence, and internal communications

·         Supporting administrative projects and departmental initiatives

 

This position is ideal for students interested in office work, organizational skills, and administrative support.

 

Public Works

The Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining community infrastructure, facilities, and public spaces within the Lower Nicola Indian Band community.

 

This includes maintenance of building, roads, landscaping, and infrastructure that supports daily operations and community wellbeing.

 

Summer students may assist with:

 

·         Grounds maintenance and landscaping

·         Community beautification projects

·         Assisting with facility maintenance

·         Supporting infrastructure and maintenance tasks

·         General labour and seasonal outdoor projects

 

This position is ideal for students who enjoy hands-on work, outdoor environments, and physical activities.

 

Qualifications

Applicants must:

 

·         Be a student returning to school in Fall 2026

·         Demonstrate a positive attitude and willingness to learn

·         Be able to work both independently and as part of a team

·         Have strong communication and interpersonal skills

·         Be reliable, responsible, and respectful

 

Additional considerations:

 

·         Ability to perform physical work may be required for Public Works roles

·         Basic computer skills are an asset for administration toles

·         Experience working with youth or community programs is an asset for Culture & Recreation roles

 

Working Conditions

 

·         Combination of office, community, and outdoor work environments

·         Some roles may involve lifting, physical tasks, or working outdoors

·         Culture & Recreation roles may occasionally support community events outside of regular hours
