Job Description

Position Title: Land Guardian

Department: Economic Development

Hours: 35 hours per week

Start Date: ASAP

Wage: up to $35/hr dependent on experience

Reports to: Director of Economic Development

Subject to: Terms and Conditions of the Personnel Policy and Annual Approved Budgets

Summary of Organizational Responsibilities:

The Land Guardian will take an active role in land and resource stewardship throughout the Nlaka’pamux Environmental Management Program (NEMP), while exerting the Lower Nicola Indian Bands continued management across the Tmixw. They will be responsible for maintaining a presence throughout the Nlaka’pamux Traditional Territory; monitoring the impacts of resource use; reporting violations to policies, as well as provincial and federal regulations; accurately collecting data; and reporting on activities. Work supports all lands & natural resource programs including terrestrial and resource use planning, fisheries, referrals, and cultural heritage protection.

This position will require someone with strong interpersonal communication skills and a vision of land stewardship. The job will be demonstrating an active role on the land, therefore, being mentally and physically fit is considered an asset. The NEMP incorporates traditional knowledge systems, customs, and practices as well as western science to understand the cumulative impacts across the Nlaka’pamux Traditional Territory affecting LNIB membership.

Roles and Responsibilities:

· Under the direction of the Cumulative Effects Coordinator and Natural Resource Coordinator, they will monitor the Tmixw through environmental programming and demonstrate a presence on the land and water;

· Coordinate territorialwildlife and bat monitoring schedules, implement deployments and data downloads, finish deployment of the community training sessions, and program logistics (i.e. equipment, travel, and maintenance)air quality monitoring program and conduct vegetation assessment work across degraded areas;

· Integrate local and traditional knowledge to aid in land and water stewardship; and

· Maintain and promote cultural continuity (youth elder mentorships, on-the-land youth programs, subsistence harvesting, language camps, etc.).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Strong written and verbal communication skills;

· Recognizes and respects cultural diversity, have experience working with local Indigenous people and has knowledge of their Culture and Traditions;

· Physically fit, able to work long hours outdoors and in all weather conditions;

· Knowledge of traditional protocols for hunting, fishing, and gathering;

· Respect for Indigenous and Western knowledge systems; and

· Ability to speak or willingness to learn the Nlaka’pamux language.

Qualifications:

· A valid Driver’s License, with access to a personal vehicle and Criminal Record Check, are mandatory;

· Post-secondary course work, undergraduate degree or similar experience in environmental, natural resource or ecology studies, preferred;

· Familiar with local environmental issues;

· Ability to work in a team setting and/or independently, and meet deadlines;

· Understanding of Indigenous Guardian programs, preferred;

· Technical experience in sampling, monitoring, and research;

· Ability to in interpret and read maps (Avenza);

· Wilderness and Bear Awareness Certification, preferred;

· ATV/UTV Certification, preferred;

· Ability to work within a fast-paced, dynamic environment;

· Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills; and

· Understanding of safety and compliance monitoring.
