Hours: 35 Hours per week

Start Date: ASAP

Wage: up to $40/hr depending on experience

Reports to: Director of Economic Development

Summary of responsibilities

The Policy Analyst will be responsible for assisting the Title and Rights Administrator in researching, analyzing, and developing policies related to the implementation of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) within the context of the Lower Nicola Indian Band. This position requires a deep understanding of Indigenous rights, laws, and policies, along with a commitment to social justice, equity, and community well-being.

Duties and tasks

· Research, analyze, and interpret DRIPA and other relevant legislation; provide insights and recommendations to the Lower Nicola Indian Band leadership regarding internal policy development.

· Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop policies and strategies that align with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to uphold LNIB’s Title and Rights.

· Monitor and assess the implementation of DRIPA policies, identifying gaps and proposing corrective actions as necessary.

· Provide guidance and support to community members, ensuring their understanding of DRIPA policies and their implications for the Lower Nicola Indian Band.

· Prepare reports, presentations, and other communication materials to inform community members, government agencies, and the public about DRIPA policies and initiatives.

· Stay updated on developments in Indigenous rights, attending relevant conferences, workshops, and training sessions to enhance knowledge and expertise.

· Act as a liaison between the Lower Nicola Indian Band and governmental bodies, advocating for LNIB's Title and Rights and promoting culturally sensitive policies.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

· Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Law, Public Policy , Natural Resource Management, or a related field.

· In-depth knowledge of Indigenous rights, UNDRIP principles, and relevant Canadian and provincial legislation.

· Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills with the ability to synthesize complex information.

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.

· Experience working within Indigenous communities and a deep understanding of their unique cultural, social, and economic contexts.

· Ability to collaborate effectively with community members, government officials, and external partners.

· Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.

· Commitment to the principles of social justice, equity, and community empowerment.

· Ability to speak or willingness to learn the Nlaka’pamux language.
