Summary

The Lighthouse Safety Support Worker will help ensure The Lighthouse is a safe refuge for those who are homeless in the community, as well as residents who live in our Supported Living suites and our Affordable Housing Tower. This staff member will play a key role in de-escalating and resolving conflicts between clients, and will assist in preventing further incidences.

The Safety Support Worker will operate within The Lighthouse building, and will also monitor activity around the perimeter of the building. This individual will be responsible for detecting any suspicious behaviour and preventing vandalism or other criminal behaviour.

Job Duties

  • Monitors internal Lighthouse buildings and perimeter of the building
  • Secures premises by patrolling property
  • Prevents losses and damages by reporting irregularities to management staff; informing violators of policies and procedures
  • Completes incident reports by recording observations, information, occurrences and surveillance activities
  • Secures all exits, doors, and windows throughout the property
  • Respond to radio calls from other departments; investigate and assess the situation
  • Utilizes strong conflict-resolution and interpersonal communication skills to de-escalate and resolve conflicts between clients, and to help prevent further incidences
  • Supervise the shelters and facilities to maintain safe and comfortable environment for all residents and staff
  • Liaise with other community resources as needed (e.g. Saskatoon Police Services, Community Support Officers, etc.)
  • Be an active and supportive listener
  • Ensure clients clearly understand rules/expectations
  • Note concerns, changes, and incidents in the log books
  • When the natural opportunity arises, reinforce conflict resolution, positive communication, household respect (through positive reinforcement, role modeling, supportive listening, etc.)
  • Communicate (verbally and in writing) pertinent information with other Lighthouse employees
  • Maintain positive relationships with community members (neighbours, visitors, etc.) and report significant issues/incidents to supervisor
  • Other related duties as assigned by supervisor

Requirements

  • Experience in the human services field or similar work environment is required
  • Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution shown through past work experience or previous training programs
  • PART/WAVE training or other conflict-resolution training is an asset
  • A customer service or people-focused employment history; strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with individuals in crisis
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to work independently, but also contribute as part of a strong collaborative team
  • A broad knowledge and experience in working with Indigenous communities is an asset
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, the philosophies of The Lighthouse
  • First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Clearance required as a condition of employment

Work Conditions

  • Hours are from 6:00 PM – 2:30 AM on Thurs - Mon evenings
  • Physical activity required including walking, standing
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Working with potentially violent/aggressive clients. Work with individuals who are intoxicated, may be volatile and may destabilize in their functioning
  • May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
  • Interacts with residents, staff, partners, as well as government/community agencies and personnel.
