Software Test Engineer

We are looking for a Software Test Engineer who is responsible for ensuring the quality, reliability, functionality, and usability of software applications, digital tools, and technical solutions which further the research, presentation, and documentation of Indigenous and Canadian history before they are released to users or clients. This is a great opportunity for a recent computer science graduate to work with a tight knit team of experienced developers and work on a range of projects in a unique industry.

Working closely with developers, project managers, designers, and other stakeholders, the Software Test Engineer develops and executes structured testing processes, identifies and documents defects, validates fixes, and helps ensure that products meet both technical requirements and user expectations.

This role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to understand how a system is intended to work while actively looking for situations where it may fail.

The Software Test Engineer should be comfortable testing software from both a technical and user perspective, including evaluating functionality, usability, accessibility, consistency, and expected user workflows.

Key Responsibilities

Software & Functional Testing

• Develop and execute test plans, test cases, and testing scenarios based on technical and functional requirements.
• Perform functional, integration, regression, system, and user acceptance testing as appropriate.
• Test new features, enhancements, bug fixes, and system updates prior to deployment.
• Validate software functionality across supported browsers, devices, operating systems, and environments.
• Verify that completed development work meets documented requirements and acceptance criteria.
• Evaluate software from both a technical and user perspective, including usability, accessibility, consistency, and overall user experience.
• Use browser developer tools and other technical tools to investigate application behaviour, errors, network requests, and HTTP responses.
• Assist with validating application integrations, APIs, and data flows between systems.

Defect Identification & Management

• Identify, reproduce, document, and track software defects and technical issues.
• Create clear and detailed bug reports that include reproduction steps, expected results, actual results, severity, and supporting evidence.
• Work collaboratively with developers to clarify defects and assist with troubleshooting.
• Conduct regression testing to ensure changes have not negatively affected existing functionality.
• Prioritize testing activities based on risk, severity, and project requirements.
• Clearly communicate the impact and potential risks associated with identified defects.

Quality Assurance

• Identify recurring technical issues and recommend improvements to development or testing processes.
• Review requirements and specifications to identify potential gaps, inconsistencies, or risks before development is completed.
• Support release-readiness assessments by identifying outstanding defects and potential risks.
• Help establish and maintain reusable test cases and testing procedures for ongoing regression testing.

Collaboration & Communication

• Work closely with developers, project managers, designers, and other team members throughout the development lifecycle.
• Participate in project meetings, sprint planning, demonstrations, and technical discussions as required.
• Collaborate with developers to understand technical implementations and potential areas of risk.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Experience in software testing, quality assurance, application support, software development, or a related technical role.
• Experience developing test cases and documenting defects.
• Ability to troubleshoot technical issues and systematically isolate the source of a problem.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify inconsistencies that may be overlooked by others.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with the following would be considered an asset:

• Automated testing tools or frameworks, i.e. Vitest.
• API testing and tools such as Postman, Insomnia, Yaak.
• SQL and database validation, primarily for MSSQL and Postgres.
• Web application and cross-browser testing.
• Experience using browser developer tools to investigate client-side errors, console messages, network requests, HTTP responses, and application behaviour.
• Basic understanding of web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
• Accessibility testing and WCAG standards.
• Performance or load testing.
• Jira, Azure DevOps, GitHub, or similar development and issue-tracking platforms.
• Agile or Scrum development environments.
• Familiarity with legacy and modern web development stacks, i.e. ASP.NET, .NET Framework, ReactJS, NextJS, Vue2, TailwindCSS, Hono, and more.
• Experience working with cloud-hosted applications or environments such as Microsoft Azure.
• Experience building end-to-end testing suites with Storybook, Playwrite, etc.

Position Details

·       Hours: Full-time with flexible hours

·       Compensation: Starting at $50K/year, with paid vacation, paid sick leave, and health and dental benefits
