The Greenbelt Foundation is an independent, charitable organization dedicated to promoting and sustaining Ontario’s Greenbelt. With the support of the Province of Ontario, in addition to its grants program which supports community and sector capacity, the Foundation undertakes evidence-based research and policy work, strategic programs, and promotes the Greenbelt and engages the public and stakeholders. By ensuring continuous, progressive investment in the Greenbelt, the Foundation nurtures a living, thriving Greenbelt for all to enjoy.
About the Role
The Foundation’s Research and Policy Team conducts evidence-based research and policy analysis to increase understanding of the value of the Greenbelt to Ontario’s communities, economy and residents. These activities inform strategies and policy proposals to protect, enhance and restore the Greenbelt and its various landscapes and systems.
The Policy Advisor plays a key role in supporting the Foundation’s policy work, assessing ongoing government policy announcements and directions, facilitating understanding of policies and providing recommendations on the continued protection and enhancement of the Greenbelt. The ideal candidate has a strong interest and knowledge of the Greenbelt (or related areas) and its objectives and policies, takes initiative, and is comfortable working with diverse stakeholders.
What You’ll Be Doing
Policy Research and Analysis
- Facilitating and supporting policy-related research projects.
- Leading policy analysis and advising on policy recommendations and development, informed by evidence and feasibility.
- Monitoring and reporting on emerging and ongoing policy-related issues that impact Greenbelt.
- Supporting the Foundation’s leadership and community relations activities on key policy issues.
- Providing support and leadership on core projects overseen by the Research and Policy Team including the Greenbelt Indicators Program and participation in the provincially led coordinated land use reviews of the Greenbelt Plans.
- Providing other support on policy and research projects, as needed.
Communication and Stakeholder Engagement
- Preparing materials to support decision-making by the Foundation and stakeholders that are accurate, relevant and easy to digest.
- Writing policy briefs and submissions in response to consultation initiatives at all levels of government, including government budgets and Environmental Registry of Ontario postings.
- Preparing correspondence, information, presentations and question and answer packages and materials.
- Building relationships with and supporting engagement of stakeholders to consult, solicit input on and develop consensus on policy issues.
- Assisting with reporting and work planning for Foundation funders.
What We’re Looking For
- Degree in Planning, Public Policy or Admin or related discipline.
- 3-5 years of experience in policy analysis and development.
- Excellent policy and report writing and presentation skills.
- Strong understanding of Ontario's political and social landscape.
- Knowledge of municipal and provincial government policies related to urban planning and environmental protection.
- Project management experience and leadership skills.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work independently and within teams.
Working with the Greenbelt Foundation
Our organization is currently operating on a hybrid work model with virtual and in-office work, based on demands of specific work tasks and/or departmental meetings.
This is a hybrid, full-time (40 hours and 5 days a week, with some flexibility) permanent position. Salary to commensurate with experience.
