About the Role 

We are looking for a Senior Ruby / Rails Engineer with strong technical judgment, product ownership mindset, and the maturity to work in customer-critical industrial systems. 

This is primarily a Ruby/Rails product engineering role. At the same time, the work often requires understanding the full product experience: backend behavior, frontend workflows, customer usability, and production supportability. The ideal candidate is strong in Ruby/Rails and comfortable contributing across product surfaces, including JavaScript frontend work, ideally Ember.js. Experience with mobile, responsive, tablet, or shop-floor user interfaces is also valuable. 

This role is not just about completing isolated development tasks. You will take ambiguous product and production problems from investigation to practical solution, and turn real customer and factory learnings into better product behaviour, diagnostics, tests, automation, documentation, and reusable engineering improvements. 

You will work on Ruby/Rails applications and backend services supporting MES workflows, quality processes, logistics, maintenance, reporting, operational visibility, customer-specific factory scenarios, and production-critical business logic. 

Our primary product stack today includes Ruby/Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis and related Ruby tooling. 

Our broader stack includes JavaScript/Ember, .NET integration components, Docker, industrial integrations, on-premise deployments, customer-specific environments, and shop-floor-facing user experiences. 

What You’ll Do 

• Build, maintain, and improve FunnelCloud product capabilities. 
• Work on software supporting MES, quality, logistics, maintenance, reporting, 3D defect mapping, AMR-enabled logistics, and operational visibility. 
• Contribute primarily in Ruby/Rails, while also working with frontend product areas when needed. 
• Improve product workflows used by operators, supervisors, maintenance, quality, logistics, Customer Success, and plant teams. 
• Work with JavaScript/Ember frontend areas where practical, especially when product behavior, usability, or customer workflow requires it. 
• Help identify customer-facing side effects, UI/workflow regressions, and cross-application impact of product changes. 
• Translate real customer and factory problems into practical product and engineering improvements. 
• Contribute to feature development, bug fixes, diagnostics, tests, automation, modernization, and supportability improvements. 
• Improve non-functional aspects of the application, including performance (profiling, memory, cache, SQL queries optimization), availability, security, reliability, maintainability. 
• Troubleshoot across Ruby/Rails, PostgreSQL, Redis, APIs, background jobs, logs, integrations, frontend behavior, and customer environments. 
• Support Customer Success’ 1st level support with deeper technical analysis during standard working hours.  
• Identify recurring production or customer issues and turn them into durable fixes, better diagnostics, tests, documentation, automation, or product improvements. 
• Improve supportability, observability, runbooks, dashboards, alerts, and engineering workflows. 
• Use AI-assisted tools and agents responsibly for specs and design, coding, debugging, log analysis, test creation, documentation, incident summaries, customer-impact review, and knowledge sharing. 
• Collaborate with Product, QA, and Customer Success teams to clarify customer challenges and deliver practical solutions. 

Production Ownership 

FunnelCloud runs in customer production environments, so senior engineers are expected to help with 2nd level technical support during standard European working hours. 

This is part of production ownership: helping resolve customer-impacting issues, supporting the 1st level team with deeper technical analysis, and using those learnings to improve the product. 

This is not an overnight or weekend on-call role for the European team. The expectation is that senior engineers help with production issues during normal working hours and contribute to making support faster, smarter, and more scalable. 

FunnelCloud already uses tools such as Papertrail, Datadog, PagerDuty, Jira Service Desk, Slack-based ChatOps, monitoring, alerting, and support workflow integrations. You will use and improve these practices where it helps reduce repeated support effort and improve customer outcomes. 

Production ownership also means thinking beyond the exact ticket or specification. We value engineers who ask how a feature affects real factory workflows, what side effects it may create elsewhere in the product, and how we can make the system easier to support after release. 

What You Bring 

• Senior-level Ruby / Ruby on Rails experience in production systems. 
• Strong understanding of backend application design, APIs, databases, background jobs, and production reliability. 
• Ability to contribute across the product when needed, not only inside isolated backend tasks. 
• Practical JavaScript experience and willingness to work with frontend code. Ember.js experience is especially valuable. 
• Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis skills. 
• Comfortable working with logs, databases, background jobs, APIs, frontend behavior, and production systems. 
• Ability to support production/customer issues during standard European working hours. 
• Ability to understand customer or operational problems and turn them into practical engineering improvements. 
• Ability to think through customer workflow, product behavior, supportability, and regression risk before calling work “done.” 
• Practical experience using AI-assisted engineering in real development work, including specification support, shared prompts/skills, coding, testing, debugging, documentation, code review preparation, and operational troubleshooting. 
• Ability to apply AI tools responsibly: validating generated output, protecting customer/company data, and using human judgment in production-impacting areas. 
• Strong ownership mindset and good judgment under pressure. 
• Ability to work independently in a remote team. 
• Ability to work consistently in a European timezone. 
• Clear written and verbal communication in English. 

Bonus Points 

• Ember.js experience or experience working with other JavaScript frontend frameworks. 
• Experience with mobile, responsive, tablet, PWA, or shop-floor-facing user interfaces. 
• Experience improving usability, workflow efficiency, or customer-facing product behavior. 
• Experience with UI regression testing, visual testing, frontend modernization, or framework upgrades. 
• Experience creating or improving reusable AI workflows, prompts, agent instructions, coding guidelines, test-generation patterns, or team-level AI development practices. 
• Manufacturing, MES, logistics, ERP, CMMS, industrial automation, AMRs, machine vision, 3D defect mapping, or shop-floor systems. 
• Papertrail, Datadog, PagerDuty, Jira Service Desk, Slack integrations, ChatOps, or AIOps-style workflows. 
• Docker, GitHub, CI/CD, scripting, deployment automation, or operational tooling. 
• C# / .NET, MQTT, OPC-UA, XML/JSON ingestion, or industrial integration experience.

• You do not need to be a pure frontend engineer, but you should not be afraid of the product surface. JavaScript experience is important, Ember.js is a strong bonus, and mobile or shop-floor UI experience would be valuable. 
• You should be comfortable supporting production/customer issues during standard working hours, not as a separate support job, but as part of owning production software responsibly. 
• You should be motivated to automate repetitive work, improve customer workflows, reduce support burden, and make factory software more reliable.
