D.M. Wills Associates Limited is in search of a Project Biologist to join the Natural Sciences group in our Environmental Services Department.

Reporting to the Natural Sciences Group Leader you will be responsible for creating technical reports with a biology focus. This entails fieldwork, data collection, entry, compilation and analysis, and report preparation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Complete fieldwork, data collection and entry for the following:
    • Ecological Land Classification mapping.
    • Vegetation inventories.
    • Wetland boundary delineations.
    • Visual and auditory bird and amphibian identification skills.
    • Habitat mapping, fish sampling and identification.
    • Species at Risk surveys.
    • Significant Wildlife Habitat surveys.
    • Headwater Drainage Feature Assessments.
  • Report compilation and analysis including understanding and determining applicability of relevant municipal, provincial, and federal government regulations.
  • Ensure key deliverables are completed on schedule and within the time allotted in the proposal.
  • Contributing to the preparation of proposals and project work plans.


Experience, Qualifications and Skills

  • You must be a highly motivated and an independent learner with a desire to be involved in the Natural Sciences field. 
  • 4-year degree in Biology or related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience providing the essential duties and responsibilities which may include:
    • Completing MTO terrestrial and fisheries assessments is considered an asset.
    • Completing Environmental Impact Studies or similar reports.
    • Fisheries and Oceans Canada Request for Reviews and Authorizations.
    • Species at Risk permitting.
    • Summarizing field observations and data into organized field notes and incorporate into technical reports.
    • Willingness to work in the outdoors for extended periods of time in varying weather conditions.
    • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent work ethic and ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously.
    • Excellent time management skills.
  • Certification in the following is considered an asset:
    • Ministry of Transportation RAQs qualifications in Fisheries Assessment, Environmental Monitoring during Construction, Fisheries Compliance during Contracts and Natural Sciences.  
    • Electrofishing.
    • Ontario Wetland Evaluation System.
    • ArcGIS mapping.

What You Will Gain

As a Project Biologist, you will gain hands-on experience with a variety of field investigations as well as report writing including existing conditions and impact assessments. You will gain direct field experience with fisheries and terrestrial monitoring including but not limited to, construction site inspections and monitoring, fish salvages, tree/plant identification, breeding bird surveys, amphibian call surveys and Ecological Land Classification (ELC).  This position will provide you the opportunity to work outdoors, and collect and analyze primary data, in addition to assisting in the development of reports to be submitted to private and government agencies.
