CAMP DRAGONFLY - MEDICAL TEAM
ABOUT CAMP DRAGONFLY: Camp Dragonfly are overnight camps for children and youth living with type 1 diabetes. While playing, sharing and learning together, campers take confidence and develop their independence in diabetes self-management. Camp Dragonfly is located at beautiful Greenhill Lake Camp in New Brunswick. We are proud to offer each camper a unique, active week, building friendship, skills and lifelong memories.

GENERAL ROLE OF MEDICAL TEAM: As a team you will be working directly with the campers in helping support, guide and educate them regarding the daily management of type 1 diabetes, this includes but may not be limited to insulin dose adjustment, insulin management, carb counting, pump therapy adjustment, correction dose management, and blood glucose monitoring. Each member of the medical team will be working in smaller groups directly with a cabin group of campers during the week. At Camp Dragonfly and Phoenix we want to ensure that we play a supporting role in helping build camper self-esteem and independence in order to allow them to grow in understanding and comfort with their own diabetes self-management.
The following roles are currently available at both Camp Dragonfly:
PHYSICIAN
Reporting to the Medical Director, the physician is available 24 hours for consultation on any medical problems that may arise during camp. The Physician’s role is to support the Medical Director and/or Nurse Coordinator with the daily insulin management and insulin dose adjustment at camp. Physicians may be scheduled to work overnight blood glucose monitoring shifts, and may be asked to provide guidance, education and supervision to Medical Students and Medical Resident.
REGISTERED NURSE
Reporting to the Nurse Coordinator, the Nurses are responsible for the supervision and support of camper insulin administration, diabetes education for campers, health assessment and nursing care of minor medical/health issues, administering medications as prescribed by physicians and other basic nursing duties. Nurses may be scheduled to work overnight blood glucose monitoring shifts, and may be asked to provide guidance, education and supervision of Student Nurses.
REGISTERED DIETITIAN
Reporting to the Dietetic Coordinator, Registered Dietitians are responsible for ensuring all camper nutrition needs are being met. Registered Dietitians work closely with the kitchen to ensure that food selection and any substitutions to the menu are appropriate, and to provide carbohydrate counts for all meal components. Registered Dietitian will also be responsible for all special dietary needs of campers and ensuring no cross contamination occurs working with the kitchen staff. Registered Dietitian may be scheduled to work overnight blood glucose monitoring shifts, and may be asked to provide guidance, education and supervision to Dietetic Interns.
MEDICAL RESIDENT/STUDENT
Reporting to the Medical Director (or to the Nurse Coordinator in the absence of an on-site Medical Director), the Medical Resident or Student is available on site, 24 hours daily for consultation on any medical problems that may arise during camp, under the supervision of the Medical Director or Physician. Working directly with a Physician the Medical Resident/Student may be scheduled to work overnight blood glucose monitoring shifts.
STUDENT NURSE
Reporting to the Nurse Coordinator, and under direct supervision of a Nurse, the Student Nurse is responsible for assisting in the diabetes and general health care of campers, blood glucose monitoring, recognizing hypo/hyperglycemia and treating according to camp protocols. Working directly with a Nurse the Student Nurse may be scheduled to work overnight blood glucose monitoring shifts.
DIETETIC INTERN/STUDENT
Reporting to and under the supervision of the Dietetic Coordinator the Dietetic Interns/Students are responsible for ensuring all camper nutrition needs are being met. Dietetic Interns will support the Registered Dietitians in working closely with the kitchen to ensure that food selection and any substitutions to the menu are appropriate, as well as, assist in portioning of food. The Dietetic Intern/Student may be scheduled to work overnight blood glucose monitoring shifts.
