The Snow Services division of Coastal Mountain Excavations works with public entities such as the Resort Municipality of Whistler and private clients such as condominium associations, businesses and individual homeowners to remove snow from streets, parking lots, driveways, and similar areas.

Functional Role

As Snowplow Operator you will respond in a timely manner to snow events and assist in the removal of snow on your assigned route utilizing a loader, backhoe, or skid steer fitted with a plow blade or bucket. You must understand and implement personal and company safety measures by wearing personal protective equipment. Communication skills are essential to work with team members. You must perform all work to regulated organizational as well as provincial and federal standards and procedures and adhere to the highest standards of safety.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers' Licence
  • Grade 12 diploma
  • Prior work experience an asset, but we welcome all those with a willingness to work hard and learn; on-the-job training is provided
  • Must be available from November 15 through March 31

The Snowplow Operator will demonstrate the following abilities in their daily work:

  • Physically demanding:
  1. Frequently rotating (right/left) - check/see mirrors, blind spots, when backing equipment up, to see wings on plow
  2. Dexterity; eye/hand and eye/hand/foot coordination
  3. Repetitive movements - body rotation, feet and hand controls
  4. Gripping and reaching
  5. Sitting for long periods of time
  6. Climbing - stairs/ladders; getting in and out of equipment
  • Customer service skills including the ability to communicate effectively with the general public
  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with other Civil Construction and Coastal Mountain Excavations employees
  • Other skills specific to the position

Lead, Manage, Accountability

The Snowplow Operator is accountable to the Operations Manager who may delegate authority to the Snow Services Foreman/woman.

Hours of Work

  • Schedule determined by your Manager
  • Overtime required during heavy snow cycles

Compensation

  • $28.00 to $35.02 per hours - depending on experience
  • Access to winter Guaranteed Income Stabilization Program

Accountabilities

The Snowplow Operator is accountable for the following:

  • Respond in a timely manner (within 30 minutes in Whistler, 45 minutes in Pemberton, or 60 minutes in Squamish) when called to plow snow on event days
  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance check-in procedures at the start and check-out procedures and end of shift including changing vehicle fluids, fueling, greasing - all maintenance other than that performed at the start and end of a shift needs to be authorized by the Chief Mechanic
  • Keep equipment clean inside and out
  • Operate snowplow to remove ice and snow from assigned areas, which may require early morning starts, extended hours, and weekend duty including holidays
  • Ensure streets, parking lots, driveways and similar areas under the responsibility of this position are adequately and safely plowed/shoveled when required
  • Always operate snowplow in a safe and legal manner; be alert to hazards and follow safe work procedures
  • Notify Manager immediately of all incidents regardless of severity and call for backup if the collision involves multiple parties, multiple passengers, or damage is of a high dollar value. Complete Motor Vehicle Incident Report Immediately
  • Log hours and activity for record keeping and complete daily paperwork in an orderly, logical and legible fashion including all pertinent information
  • Keep Manager informed of status regularly
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by displaying courteous, friendly manner
  • Always maintain personal safety gear (hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel toed boots)
  • Always maintain personal foul/cold weather gear (rain gear, rubber boots, warm clothing)
