The Civil Construction division of Coastal Mountain Excavations works with public entities and private clients such as condominium associations, businesses and individual homeowners to provide earthworks including land development and road structures, drilling and blasting, site preparation and utility services, design and build projects, and landscape and grading services.


Functional Role

The Civil Construction Labourer plays a vital support role in the Construction division by assisting in construction activities. You are required to perform all tasks in an effective, complete and professional manner and is responsible for adhering to all policies and values of Coastal Mountain Excavations Ltd. while at work.

Qualifications

  • Physically fit with strong stamina
  • Grade 12 diploma
  • Prior work experience an asset, but we welcome all those with a willingness to work hard and learn; on-the-job training is provided

    (v) Bending, crouching, kneeling
    (vi) Hand-eye coordination

  • Interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate effectively with other Civil Construction and Coastal Mountain Excavations employees
  • Operation of hand tools and other skills specific to the position

Reporting Relationships

The Civil Construction Labourer reports to the Operations Manager who may delegate authority.

Hours of Work

· Generally, 7:30am – 4:00pm, Monday – Friday
· Overtime required during busy construction periods

Compensation

  • $25.00 - $32.00 depending on experience
  • Extended health and dental benefits after 180-day waiting period

Accountabilities

The Civil Construction Labourer is responsible for the following:

  • Reporting to the Foreman, Pipe Layer, or Operator with whom they have been scheduled to work
  • Obtaining necessary tools
  • Working diligently, following instructions and anticipating and filling crew needs
  • Completing daily paperwork
  • Ensuring customer satisfaction by displaying courteous, friendly manner
  • Ensuring on-site quality control
  • Maintaining personal safety gear at all times (hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel toed boots)
  • Maintaining personal foul weather gear at all times (rain gear, rubber boots)
  • Demonstrate CME Personal Protective Equipment standard by attending morning meeting in hard hat, high-vis safety vest, steel toed boots
  • Load and unload construction materials, and move materials to work areas
  • Erect and dismantle concrete forms, scaffolding, ramps, catwalks, shoring and barricades required at construction sites
  • Mix, pour and spread materials such as concrete and asphalt
  • Assist tradespersons such as carpenters in construction activities
  • Assist heavy equipment operators to secure special attachments to equipment, signal operators to guide them in moving equipment and aid in other activities
  • Assist in aligning pipes and perform related activities during hydro, telephone, sewer, and water pipeline construction
  • Assist in drilling and blasting rock at construction sites
  • Level earth to fine grade specifications using rake and shovel
  • Assist in demolishing buildings using prying bars and other tools, and sort, clean and pile salvaged materials
  • Remove rubble and other debris at construction sites using rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and other equipment
  • Operate pneumatic hammers, vibrators and tampers as directed
  • Tend or feed machines or equipment used in construction such as mixers, compressors and pumps
  • Clean up chemical spills and other contaminants, and remove asbestos and other hazardous materials
  • Oil and grease hoists and similar equipment
  • Direct traffic at or near construction site
  • Perform other activities at construction sites, as directed.
  • Arriving at scheduled assembly point on time and ready for work
