K’en T’em Limited Partnership is seeking a Junior Archaeologist to support ongoing environmental and archaeological projects in the Nlaka'pamux territory. The incumbent will be required to work a flexible schedule, with office days being 8-hour shifts, and fieldwork ranging from 8-12 hour shifts. This role will require work outdoors, in all weather conditions, and may require work to be conducted on weekends and extended hours during peak fieldwork months (May through October).
Primary Duties
- Participates in locating, collecting, recording, and interpreting data for survey and excavation projects,
- Coordinates on-site logistics for archaeological projects and resolves problems to ensure the timely, safe, and effective completion of project objectives,
- Act as a consultant to both K'en T'em and the not-for-profit organization Citxw Nlaka'pamux Assembly,
- Ensures the application of safe work practices by crew members during survey/excavation projects,
- Provides functional guidance and leadership to technical staff in areas of specialty, such as faunal, lithic, and/or ceramic analysis,
- Assists with project planning activities, including identifying appropriate equipment, resources, personnel needs, project budgets, and research design,
- Writes or co-authors archaeological survey, excavation, and analysis reports that meet all reporting requirements, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Lead Archaeologist.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office,
- Prepared for and able to perform physically demanding work in all conditions/terrain and outside regular work hours with the ability to carry equipment (up to 50 lb),
- Positive attitude towards implementing health and safety systems,
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal, analytical, technical report writing skills, and project management skills,
- Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and manage time effectively,
- Ability to supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as: hard hat, protective eyewear, high visibility vest and steel-toe boots,
- Previous work with Indigenous government or organizations is considered an asset, and
- Willingness to learn beginner nłeʔkepmxcín, nłeʔkepmx cultural values and protocols while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity.
Experience and Requirements
- A 4-year Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology is an asset,
- 1-2 years of experience in a related field,
- Valid BC class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel to remote field locations,
- Minimum age of 18, in accordance with the Mines Act 3.2.1.,
- Completion of RISC training is an asset, and
- Valid first aid certificate preferred.
Work Environment
- Schedule: Office hours will be between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, with a 30-minute paid lunch break. Regular fieldwork hours will be between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, with a 30-minute paid lunch break. Due to fluctuating project needs, work schedules are posted, averaging 40 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be paid out at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be paid out at 2x,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the K’en T’em office at Lac Le Jeune Rd. Kamloops, BC, or Merritt, BC (whichever is closer to the successful candidate’s residence),
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
