You don’t need to have a degree to apply. We’re just as interested in people who are curious, thoughtful, and have something to say. This role is about community storytelling, building relationships, sharing voices, and helping reflect the people and stories of our communities in a meaningful way. If you’ve ever thought about writing, storytelling, or making an impact through media, this could be your way in.

Please note that this role is contingent upon successful funding application and is currently funded for 1 year.

  • Take photos to go along with your stories,

  • Help make sure Indigenous and nłeʔképmx voices are represented in a fair, accurate, and respectful way, alongside K’en T’em Limited Partnership, and
  • Learn how to manage a number of stories at once and meet weekly deadlines with support from the team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • You enjoy writing and know how to get your ideas across clearly,
  • You care about storytelling and what’s happening in your community,
  • You have an interest in Indigenous communities and perspectives, or lived experience you bring to the work,
  • You’re curious, take initiative, and are excited about learning how journalism works, and
  • You can stay organized, work on your own when needed, and meet deadlines.

Experience and Requirements

  • Any writing or reporting experience is helpful, including community work, blogging, creative writing, or media,
  • Photography or multimedia skills are an asset,
  • Not required (but an asset), post-secondary education in journalism, communications, or a related field, and
  • A valid BC driver’s license with access to reliable transportation, and willingness to travel within the community to cover stories is required.

Work Environment

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break, fluctuating when needed to cover events and breaking news. On average, 35 hours per week,
  • Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
  • Reporting Office Location: Most office work will be conducted from the Merritt Herald office at 1951 Garcia St, Merritt BC, with frequent in-community work such as interviews and event coverage. Hybrid options may be considered for a candidate that is fully qualified,
  • Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
  • Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
  • Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
