The Archaeology Department Manager provides leadership and operational oversight for the Archaeology Department, with a primary focus on people management, service delivery, and departmental effectiveness. This role is responsible for ensuring archaeology projects are appropriately resourced, coordinated, and supported, while fostering a positive and accountable team environment. The Archaeology Department Manager is not required to act as the senior technical archaeologist or permit holder, but must possess a working understanding of archaeology and cultural heritage management in British Columbia in order to effectively support staff, oversee project delivery, and engage in informed decision-making.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal technical experts who lead archaeological methodology, permitting, and discipline-specific work, while the Department Manager focuses on leadership, planning, coordination, and operational oversight.
Primary Duties
People Leadership & Department Management
- Lead, support, and mentor Archaeology Department staff,
- Foster a respectful, collaborative, and accountable team culture,
- Support performance management, professional development, conflict resolution, and workload planning, and
- Coordinate onboarding, training, and staffing needs in collaboration with senior technical staff
Operations & Service Delivery
- Oversee day-to-day departmental operations to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery,
- Support project planning, scheduling, and coordination across multiple archaeology projects,
- Monitor workloads, resourcing, and priorities to ensure deliverables are met, and
- Support scope, schedule, and budget tracking in collaboration with project leads.
Project & Stakeholder Support
- Participate in internal and external meetings from a leadership and coordination perspective,
- Support relationship-building with Indigenous communities, clients, and project partners, and
- Ensure projects align with organizational values, policies, and contractual commitments.
Safety & Accountability
- Promote compliance with organizational policies, procedures, and occupational health and safety requirements,
- Support consistent documentation, reporting, and internal controls,
- Model ethical leadership, professionalism, and accountability, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Natural Resources Manager
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of archaeology and cultural heritage management practices in British Columbia,
- General understanding of archaeological permitting and regulatory processes,
- Proven ability to lead and support teams with specialized technical expertise,
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, technical report writing skills, and project management skills,
- Proven ability to build and maintain trusting relationships using effective communication and integrity,
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities,
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines, and remain organized under pressure and in dynamic environments,
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism,
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Teams, and virtual meeting platforms,
- Ability to take direction and act with precision and accountability,
- Willingness to learn or knowledge of nłeʔkepmx cultural values, nłeʔkepmx protocols, and beginner nłeʔkepmxcín, and
- Recognizes and respects cultural diversity.
Experience and Requirements
- 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience, preferably within the environmental field, or other technical service environments,
- Demonstrated experience managing people, projects, or departmental operations,
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is a strong asset,
- Experience with managing projects with multiple team members,
- Valid first aid certificate preferred,
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License,
- Able to provide a Criminal Record Check (CRC),
- Post-secondary education in Archaeology, Anthropology, Cultural Resource Management, Business Administration, Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and
- Registered Professional Consulting Archaeologist (RPCA) designation and permit-holder eligibility are considered strong assets, but are not required.
Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm less one half-hour paid lunch, with fluctuation when needed. On average, 40 hours per week, with the expectation that the Manager will complete the workload and work to ensure deliverables are met,
- Overtime: As per the BC Employment Standards Act (BCESA), Managers are not eligible for overtime,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the K’en T’em office in either Merritt or Kamloops BC, with the expectation that field work is required,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
