We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Aquatic Biologist to oversee the design, implementation, and management of fish and aquatic programs across a range of natural resource projects. This senior role will lead environmental reporting and regulatory compliance requirements related to mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, and other infrastructure developments, while building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, regulators, Indigenous communities, and stakeholders. The successful candidate will mentor junior and intermediate biologists, manage contracts and budgets, contribute to proposal development, and establish high professional standards through the development of internal procedures and field methodologies. This position is ideal for a Registered Professional Biologist (or eligible candidate) with strong technical expertise, proven project management experience, and a commitment to supporting Indigenous governance and capacity in natural resource stewardship
Primary Duties
- Lead the design and implementation of fish and/or aquatic programs,
- Lead annual fish and aquatic reporting. Including reports related to environmental impact assessments and permit requirements within the oil and gas, mining, and renewable energy sectors,
- •Build and maintain partnerships with industry clients, provincial and federal regulators, community leaders, and other stakeholders,
- Mentor and support junior and intermediate biologists in both field and office-based deliverables,
- Develop and implement internal standard operating procedures, field methodologies, and new practices to improve efficiency and professional standards,
- Prepare responses to Requests for Proposals (RFPs), Requests for Quotes (RFQs), and pursue contract opportunities on behalf of K’en T’em Limited Partnership,
- Manage contracts through client meetings, monthly financial tracking and ensuring reporting requirements are met,
- Coordinate field staff scheduling and support to ensure smooth and efficient project delivery, and
- Other ad hoc duties as assigned by the Natural Resource Manager.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of fish (freshwater preferred) and aquatic sampling methods,
- Strong understanding of environmental legislation, regulations, and compliance requirements,
- Familiarity with federal and provincial legislation and regulations governing fish and aquatics,
- Familiarity with Indigenous environmental governance and community engagement is an asset,
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining budgets and meeting deadlines,
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe, and
- Willingness to learn beginner nłeʔkepmxcín, nłeʔkepmx cultural values and protocols while recognizing and respecting cultural diversity.
Experience and Requirements
- Post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field,
- Minimum 10 years of relevant professional experience, including field-based work,
- Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) designation or the ability to obtain it,
- Experience evaluating the potential impacts of large infrastructure projects on valued components (VCs), with preference for experience leading fish or aquatic components in provincial and federal environmental assessments; or
- Experience managing fish or aquatic programs related to permit requirements for the mining or oil and gas sectors,
- Experience with GIS and R is considered an asset,
- Successful completion of a criminal background check, and
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License and access to a reliable personal vehicle.
Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm less one half-hour paid lunch, with fluctuation when needed. On average, 40 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the K’en T’em office at Lac Le Jeune Rd. Kamloops, BC, or Merritt, BC (whichever is closer to the successful candidates residence), with the expectation of field work as needed. Remote or hybrid options may be considered for a candidate that is fully qualified,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
