The Merritt Herald, an award-winning community newspaper, is seeking a Reporter to join our newsroom as part of our Changing the Narrative initiative. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about writing, storytelling, and community journalism, particularly from an Indigenous perspective. While a journalism degree is an asset, we also welcome applicants who may be a “diamond in the rough” – someone with strong writing ability, curiosity, lived experience, and a desire to learn the newspaper industry.
Please note that this role is contingent upon successful funding application.
Primary Duties
- Research, write, and photograph news and feature stories for print and digital platforms,
- Cover local events, people, and issues that matter to the community,
- Conduct interviews and build respectful relationships with sources,
- Attend public meetings, community events, and other assignments as required,
- Contribute to the fair, accurate, and respectful inclusion of Indigenous and nłeʔképmx voices and stories, in collaboration with K’en T’em Limited Partnership, and
- Meet weekly deadlines while managing multiple assignments.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong writing and communication skills,
- A passion for storytelling and community-focused journalism,
- Interest in or lived experience with Indigenous communities and perspectives,
- Curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to learn journalism fundamentals, and
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Experience and Requirements
- Post secondary in Journalism, Communications, or a related field is an asset, but not required,
- Previous writing or reporting experience (community work, blogging, creative writing, media, etc.),
- Photography or multimedia skills, and
- A valid BC driver’s license and willingness to travel within the community to cover stories, is required.
Work Environment
- Schedule: Monday through Friday between 8:30am and 4:30pm, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break, fluctuating when needed to cover events and breaking news. On average, 35 hours per week,
- Overtime: All daily overtime over 8 hours will be banked at 1.5x, all hours over 12 will be banked at 2x,
- Reporting Office Location: Office work will be conducted from the Merritt Herald office at 1951Garcia St, Merritt BC,
- Vacation: 2 weeks paid vacation (10 working days), accrued at 0.84 per month,
- Winter Break: 2 weeks paid (max 10 working days),
- Benefits: 50% benefit premiums paid by employer,
- Pension: Pension matching (percentage increasing with years of service), and
- Personal and Professional Development: As part of total compensation, we supply full-time permanent employees with the means to advance their skills and education, and
- Car and Cell Phone Allowance.
