Organizational Overview: CASSA is a social justice Charitable organisation serving the South Asian communities living in Canada through advocacy, research, capacity building, policy development, and training. CASSA is structured as an umbrella agency of over 120 member agencies serving South Asian communities. Our target population are marginalized, underprivileged, and disenfranchised segments of the South Asian communities including youth, women, seniors, disabled, poverty stricken, and 2SLGBTQI+ groups.
CASSA understands and incorporates the diversity of the South Asian diaspora in all of our work since South Asians come from various linguistic, cultural, ethnic, and gender backgrounds. We ensure our projects are inclusive and welcoming and work through the lens of community empowerment, racial equity and gender equity.
Description of Project: The South Asian Social Justice Network - Quebec Lead will be responsible for the development of a regional Social Justice Network for South Asian communities in Quebec. The regional South Asian Social Justice Network in Quebec will strengthen CASSA's advocacy efforts to influence policies at the local, regional, and provincial level through the network's collective voice to advocate for systematic changes on social justice issues. The expected participants for this project are those with a shared interest in advocating for social justice issues within the South Asian communities and allies in other racialized communities. This includes social service organizations, community activists, community leaders and the South Asian community members including marginalized women, youth, and seniors. Agencies and leaders who join the network will share best practices and build capacity by providing their expertise and resources to address pressing issues in each province. The target audience for the advocacy will be decision makers, elected representatives, and government bureaucrats. Additionally, the Lead will also work with their Alberta and British Columbia
counterparts to develop educational and capacity building opportunities for their Network.
Job Responsibilities:
● Develop strategies to actively engage with the South Asian communities in Quebec (i.e. Montreal) which includes attending community events, participating in local forums, and building relationships with community leaders and local organizations
● Build and maintain partnerships with South Asian serving groups and agencies and invite them to be part of the Social Justice Network
● Coordinate network-wide meetings to be held on a bi-monthly basis to address and prioritize issues faced by each community including racial discrimination, hate crime and hate speech, gender inequities, health inequities, settlement and immigration challenges, economic inequities, among other issues.
● Meet with decision makers, elected representatives and government staff as required
● Co-develop policy and program recommendations with inclusive policies and community education with calls to action with the Network
● Work with Alberta and British Columbia counterparts to develop learning and capacity building opportunities for the networks
● Organize one in-person knowledge sharing and networking forum in Montreal for social justice agencies and leaders
● Keep the Network informed of CASSA’s projects and activities and support the curation of new partnerships
Key Qualifications:
● Minimum 2 years working in racialized and marginalized communities.
● Minimum 2-3 years of experience with leading and coordinating community engagement and/or anti-racism projects
● Completion of post-secondary degree relating to social sciences, human rights, public policy, or related fields.
● Experience working with community members, faith groups, community organizations and agencies to engage marginalised or racialized community members.
● Ability to liaise with stakeholders such as non-profit organizations, grassroots groups, elected representatives, and social service agencies.
● Understanding of community issues facing South Asian residents of Alberta
● Strong leadership skills, ability to build the trust of others, and be motivated
● Experience working with South Asian communities or other marginalised communities in Quebec
● Some understanding of social media promotions, marketing, and outreach
● Experience doing community outreach, leading community meetings, synthesizing community feedback and developing recommendations.
