COMPENSATION: $65,000 - $95,000 per year

Job Description

Reporting to the Editor & Publisher, the Audio/Radio Reporter will regularly file for the Monday edition of CANADALAND. They are responsible for maintaining accurate reporting and publications across Canadaland’s journalism podcasts, as well as the website, the company social media channels, and when appropriate, show notes.

The Audio/Radio Reporter is comfortable recording themselves in-studio with a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), or in the field with industry-standard audio equipment.They are meticulous with fact checking, writing, and copy editing, with an aptitude for media and policy analysis. They are a skilled collaborator with excellent communication skills and receptiveness towards editorial feedback. This is a full-time unionized position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Pitches story ideas to the Senior Producer and helps to deliberate on episode topics for the Monday edition of CANADALAND. 
  • Researches show topics as developed by their team
  • Writes and edits scripts for Canadaland as assigned, including interview questions.
  • Submits drafts for revisions to the Senior Producer in a timely manner.
  • Directs interviews through a combination of pre-written questions and on-the-fly responses.
  • Records their voiceovers and audio content for podcast episodes, including taping phone calls.
  • Reads advertisements to be delivered to the Ad Sales Team according to established deadlines.
  • Attends company meetings and strategy sessions. 
  • Participates in crowdfunding campaigns and audience engagement events.
  • Travels for work commitments such as reporting a story and recording interviews and/or appearing at conferences.
  • Promotes the show through possible media appearances in other outlets. 
  • Supports the Management Team on special projects as needed.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.
Key Requirements
  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience working for a news organization. 
  • Educational background in communications, broadcasting, journalism or equivalent work experience is required.   
  • Prior experience in writing and reporting audio-first stories, for radio or podcast, is required. 
  • Documentary production experience is considered an asset.
  • Prior hosting experience is considered an asset.  
  • Strong interviewing and writing skills. 
  • Experience crafting and delivering tape talks.
  • Proven ability to conduct research and complete accurate fact checking.
  • Knowledge and thorough understanding of journalistic standards and ethics is required. 
  • Knowledge of CP style is required.
  • Knowledge of at least one Digital Audio Workstation platform (e.g. Reaper or Audition) is required.
  • Knowledge of at least one auto-transcription service (e.g. Descript or Sonix) is considered an asset.
  • Proficient in Google Suite and Wordpress, with the ability to update a website. 
  • Excellent writing skills, and the ability to shape and uphold Canadaland’s stylistic voice.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Strong ability to organize daily, weekly and monthly workloads by prioritizing.
  • Resourceful with the ability to uncover solutions, learn new skills and take on challenges.
  • Professional verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work well with others, and collaborate as a member of a team. 
  • Passion for journalism, media, podcasts, and Canadaland’s mission.
