Brigadoon Village is one of Canada’s largest pediatric medical camps. It’s a non-profit recreational facility that delivers year-round camp programming to transform the lives of Atlantic Canadian children and youth living with health conditions and other life challenges. We help them reach their full potential through experiential learning, meaningful connections and exceptional fun.

Brigadoon Village is located on Aylesford Lake in the Annapolis Valley with an office located in Halifax.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Controller plays a key role in stewarding the financial health of the organization. This role leads core accounting functions, ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, and supports strong financial practices that enable the organization to deliver on its mission.

Working closely with the CEO and Finance & Audit Committee of the Board, the Controller provides clear, reliable financial insights while maintaining effective controls, compliance, and accountability.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Oversight

  • Lead monthly and year-end close processes
  • Prepare accurate financial statements and supporting reports
  • Provide variance analysis and insights to support decision-making
  • Ensure integrity of the general ledger, reconciliations, and journal entries

 Accounting Operations

  • Oversee accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and cash flow management
  • Maintain and continuously improve accounting policies and procedures
  • Monitor financial transactions and ensure proper documentation and controls

Compliance & Audit

  • Ensure compliance with CRA regulations and nonprofit reporting requirements
  • Lead the annual audit process and coordinate with external auditors
  • Support preparation of filings (e.g., T3010, funder reports, grant reporting)

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Support development of the annual budget in collaboration with leadership
  • Maintain cash flow projections and financial forecasts
  • Provide ongoing financial insights to support planning and sustainability

 Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain accounting/payroll systems and tools (e.g., Powerpay, Sage Intacct)
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve reporting
  • Strengthen internal controls and financial processes as the organization evolves

 Leadership & Collaboration

  • Partner with the leadership team to support operational and strategic decisions
  • Support and guide finance-related processes across the organization
  • Act as a key resource to the Board of Directors or Finance & Audit Committee on financial matters

 

Qualifications:

Required

  • CPA designation (or equivalent experience in a senior accounting role)
  • 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting and internal controls
  • Experience with audits and financial statement preparation
  • Proficiency in Excel and accounting systems

Preferred

  • Experience in a nonprofit or charitable organization
  • Familiarity with grant reporting and fund accounting
  • Experience leading or supporting accounting system integrations
  • Experience working with or reporting to a Board of Directors
