Position Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our team. Reporting to the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for leading and overseeing the daily and month-end accounting processes of the business, culminating in reliable and timely financial reporting. The position is responsible for establishing and maintaining processes in the management of accounts payable, as well as the approval and submission of weekly payments, monitoring accounts receivable and cash balances, month-end close reporting, and review of payroll. This position requires strong organizational skills, a high level of accuracy, the ability to work within deadlines, and the ability to take ownership of the accounting activities performed by the business.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform month-end close reporting, including maintaining month-end workpapers, first review of bank and credit card reconciliations, maintenance of the fixed asset register, posting of accruals and journal entries, first review of loan schedule entries, balancing all balance sheet accounts, payroll journals, and tax journals.
  • Review the weekly cash forecast prepared by the Accountant.
  • First review of bi-weekly payroll prepared by the Accountant, assisting with any payroll-related issues and reconciliation of hours worked and time off taken.
  • Onboard or review new employees in the payroll system, and issue ROEs for exiting employees.
  • Monitor accounts receivable and weekly cash balances. Assist the Accounting Administrator with any customer deposit issues relating to cheques and EFTs.
  • Reconcile and review cash received captured by the Accounting Administrator with bank records accounted for by the Accountant.
  • Conduct weekly review of accounts payable entered into QuickBooks Online by the Accountant.
  • Submit weekly payments on the online banking platform for accounts payable after approval from the Controller.
  • Submit monthly GST returns and annual WCB returns.
  • Report to the Controller, acting as a trusted partner and providing support with ad hoc tasks as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.


Qualifications:

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
  • Two years of experience in a similar role.
  • Takes ownership of the accounting cycle and responsibility for resolving issues as they arise.
  • Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and streamline processes.
  • High level of MS Excel proficiency.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online.
  • Experience with payroll processing and review.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting standards, including ASPE.
  • Knowledge of CRA regulations, Labour Standards, WCB, and GST rules.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to be a team player.
