Organization Summary:

Working collaboratively with the Indigenous Diversion Center of the Prince George team, the Cultural Facilitator works from a wholistic, culturally grounded, and trauma-informed lens to support Indigenous individuals who have been in contact with the criminal justice system. Working as a knowledge keeper, spiritual and cultural facilitator, the position provides guidance and detailed planning of cultural practice within or outside of the Diversion Center.

The Cultural Facilitator is an integral and vital member of the Diversion Team in providing teachings and cultural support to IDC participants. The Cultural Facilitator will work together with the Cultural Coordinator, the Land-Based Coordinator, the Elder and help to create programming that meets the needs of participants where they are at. This will include coordinating and setting up cultural events, ceremonies, teachings, land-based healing and practices for participants who wish to stay connected, reconnect or begin their journey connecting to culture. This is a creative position allowing the Cultural Facilitator to bring his/her vision to ensure the IDC remains a leader in Indigenous-led programming.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads the sweat lodge ceremony, and other ceremonies as deemed appropriate.
  • Supports land-based activities, such as processing meat, hunting, trapping, etc.
  • Deliver the Sacred Bundle Journey and Drum Group in office.
  • Organize seasonal camps (winter, spring, summer, fall).
  • Develop and lead cultural activities such as the Sundance Committee.
  • Ability to work after-hours to accommodate RCMP pre-charge drop-offs.
  • Work closely with the Cultural Coordinator to deliver programming as needed.
  • Follow privacy and safety rules as outlined in the Indigenous Diversion Centre’s Operational Manual.
  • Notice and report any risks or safety concerns to the Associate Director so they can be addressed as a team.
  • Share cultural knowledge in a way that welcomes everyone, no matter what their background or beliefs.
  • Build and keep good relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community partners.
  • Include cultural teachings and values in all programming to support participants in a respectful and meaningful way.
  • Provide help to Elders and Knowledge Keepers with travel plans, expenses, or basic technical support when needed.
  • Do other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to foster relationships and build rapport while creating/maintaining a culturally and trauma informed safe environment.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and use tact and good judgment in dealing with sensitive and complex issues.
  • Able to work intentionally as well as collaboratively with the Cultural Lead and Social Work Team.
  • Able to problem solve and take initiative.
  • Occasional travel to attend meetings or training is required.
  • Working with trauma and the impacts of colonization daily.
  • Operates under general direction, makes a broad range of decisions using judgement, knowledge and experience and based on policy and past precedents as a guide to ensure the successful execution of projects; and operates with some latitude for decision making.
  • Escalates decisions Associate Director when required

 

Reporting: Associate Director of Northern Diversion & Healing

Location: Prince George, BC

Pay Range: $80,000 - $85,000 - salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Hours: Full-time (35hours/week); Mondays to Fridays
