As a Junior Full-Stack Engineer at Avenue you’ll work across the company, developing products to deliver greater value to our clients, supercharge our internal operations team and fuel growth. Our products are built on a solid foundation, but we have plenty to improve and an exciting product roadmap ahead!

We are looking for someone excited to dive in, ship code regularly, and bring a new perspective to challenges. As part of a lean and agile engineering team, you will have opportunities to learn and grow quickly while tackling complex problems hands-on.

What You'll Do

  • Work with the Engineering team to plan, build, deliver, and maintain products and services according to the priorities set out by the product roadmap.
  • Build and maintain Laravel (PHP) and React (JS) services that power our platform, on a LEMP stack, alongside custom WordPress multisite plugins that enable our site network.
  • Participate in sprint planning, scoping, and creating tickets as necessary.
  • Routinely participate in peer review of code as part of our development process, being open to providing and receiving constructive feedback.

  • Provide support to our operations teams by troubleshooting and resolving escalated client issues and technical questions.
  • Collaborate across internal teams to clarify requirements, explore issues, provide updates, and present discoveries.
  • Identify opportunities and risks with projects, highlighting them with stakeholders, and understanding the trade-offs.

About You

  • You have experience working across the back-end, front-end, and command line to build and ship API-driven applications.
  • You are capable of building APIs with modern, object oriented PHP particularly in frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony.
  • You have knowledge of relational databases and query authoring in SQL.
  • You are capable of building UIs with organized, modular React or have experience with similar client-side frameworks.
  • You are competent with the foundations of front-end development, including HTML, JS, and CSS.
  • Eager to solve problems, you are curious and driven to improve. Undaunted by the unfamiliar, you seek to understand and untangle issues on your own, but know when to ask for help.
  • A collaborator, you share input and incorporate feedback every chance you get. You seek out ways you can add value and help teammates.
  • Comfortable working in an Agile environment, you are familiar with common software development practices such as version control, code reviews, testing, and refactoring.
  • An adaptor to change, you work well in an ever-shifting, multi-priority startup environment. Always flexible and ready to hop on any opportunity that’s needed.

  1. Phone screen with hiring manager. This is an informal conversation to learn a little about you and provide more information about the role and Avenue.
  2. Technical Assessment. A short take-home coding test to help you showcase your technical knowledge and aptitude.
  3. Competency-based panel interviews with 3 members of Avenue’s team (including one representative from Avenue’s internal DEI council).

Compensation and Benfits

  • Annual salary of $60,000 (CAD).

Avenue is a distributed, fully remote organization. We transitioned to this way of working in 2020 (like everyone else!) but haven’t looked back since and plan to remain so permanently.
