Youth Basketball League Convenor & Skills Coach

Position Overview 

The Youth Basketball League Convenor & Skills Coach is responsible for the overall delivery and on-site execution of the Athlete Institute Basketball League and Youth Basketball Development Clinics. This role combines leadership, operations, and player development to ensure a structured, competitive, and positive experience for all participants. 

As the primary on-site representative of the league, the Convenor plays a critical role in maintaining program quality, managing game operations, and fostering strong relationships with athletes, parents, coaches, and staff. 

Lead and deliver high-quality youth basketball programming across AIBL leagues, small group training, and clinics. This role blends league operations, coaching, and player development while creating a structured, positive, and high-energy environment for all athletes. 

Schedule & Commitment 

  • League Schedule:
    • 9-week seasons, 3x per year
    • Mondays and Wednesdays (6:30-9:30pm)
  • Clinics Schedule:
    • 6-8 week blocks, year-round
    • Tuesdays and/or Thursdays (6:30-9:30pm)


Key Responsibilities 

1. League Leadership & Customer Experience 

  • Serve as the primary on-site representative and “face of the program” 
  • Deliver exceptional customer service to athletes, parents, and spectators 
  • Address questions, concerns, and conflicts in a professional and timely manner 
  • Uphold league standards, culture, and values at all times – ensuring a positive growth environment for all 


2. Game Day Operations & Equipment Management 

  • Oversee all aspects of game night execution 
  • Manage referees, time/score keepers, facility staff and volunteer coaches 
  • Ensure games run on schedule and adhere to league standards 
  • Step in to support game operations (e.g., score keeping/time keeping) when required 
  • Monitor gameplay and intervene when necessary to address sportsmanship, safety, or significant score discrepancies 


3. Jersey Distribution Leadership: 

  • Take full ownership of jersey distribution day operations 
  • Ensure jerseys are accurately assigned and distributed to the correct athletes 
  • Confirm proper sizing for all participants at time of distribution 
  • Track and document any sizing discrepancies or inventory shortages 
  • Communicate all outstanding jersey requirements to the Program Manager in a timely manner, including a clear summary of sizes and quantities needed 


4. Staff & Volunteer Management 

  • Lead and support referees, coaches, and volunteers/help aquire volunteers if possible 
  • Ensure coaching standards align with league expectations and development goals 
  • Provide guidance and feedback to maintain a high-quality experience 
  • Foster a positive, accountable, and professional environment 


5. League Setup, Player Evaluation & Competitive Balance 

  • Work collaboratively with the Athlete Institute Program Manager to design and implement a structured evaluation process prior to Week 1 
  • Organize and execute pre-season evaluation sessions with strong attention to detail 
  • Assess player skill levels to support the creation of balanced and competitive team rosters 
  • Assist in structuring divisions to ensure appropriate levels of competition 
  • Continuously monitor league play and collaborate with the Program Manager to maintain competitive balance throughout the season 
  • Ensure ongoing alignment between evaluations, team composition, and league objectives 


6. Player Development Programming 

  • Plan and deliver a consistent 20-30-minute weekly training session prior to scheduled games 
  • Design sessions focused on skill development, game awareness, and basketball IQ 
  • Ensure training is age-appropriate, engaging, and aligned with long-term athlete development principles 
  • Adapt programming to accommodate varying skill levels while maintaining consistency in curriculum 
  • Create an inclusive and positive learning environment for all participants 
  • Reinforce fundamentals, teamwork, and sportsmanship through structured instruction 


Assets (Not Mandatory): 


  • Background in kinesiology, physical literacy, or youth athletic development 
  • Experience applying development-based training principles in a youth sport setting 
  • Basketball coaching certificates (NCCP/Canada Basketball) 
  • Prior experience as a Coach and/or Sports League Convenor 


Key Skills & Qualifications 

  • Strong leadership and decision-making ability in fast-paced environments 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills 
  • In-depth understanding of basketball (playing, coaching, or officiating experience preferred) 
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously 
  • Experience working with youth athletes is an asset 
  • Ability to use associated league operation software's
