Seasonal Historical Interpreter positions are being hired through a staffing contract with the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert. Historical Interpreters will work full time at Father Lacombe Chapel Provincial Historic Site, providing visitor services on behalf of the Alberta Arts, Culture and Status of Women.
As a Historical Interpreter, you will lead tours of the historic site and surroundings; participate in the planning, development, and presentation of educational program and special events; and coordinate craft and skill demonstrations. This job will allow you to develop a wide variety of skills including public speaking, customer service, program development, interpretation techniques, research, social media, and historical crafts and skills.
Seasonal position: April 28 - September 1, 2025
Job Type: Seasonal, full time (37.5 hours weekly)
Job Location: Father Lacombe Chapel on Mission Hill in St. Albert, Alberta
Workdays: 5 days a week, work schedule requires weekend work, holiday Mondays and occasional evenings
Duties include:
- Lead educational and community programs.
- Provide guided tours for drop in visitors.
- Prepare materials for programs, craft, and skill demonstrations.
- Plan and develop weekly drop-in activities for families.
- Collection, organization, and reporting of visitor statistics.
- Planning and prepping for special event days.
- Participate in weekly team meetings.
- Open and close the historic building daily.
- Keep historic building and general site clean and safe for visitors and interpretive team.
Successful candidates for this position will be able to speak confidently to large and small groups of people in a public setting and be able to assimilate large amounts of information quickly. You must have the ability to work effectively with a range of audiences, from young children to seniors, and actively contribute to a workplace team. The position requires a basic understanding of the history of Alberta, an interest in historical interpretation, as well as planning and organizational skills. Training is provided.
Qualifications
Post-secondary education and/or experience in the following fields are desirable:
- Education, Drama, Historical Interpretation, Canadian History, Aboriginal Studies, and Recreation Administration.
The successful candidate for this position will:
- Be able to learn large amounts of information quickly and be able to confidently speak and work with a range of audiences with varying backgrounds, from young children to seniors, in groups both large and small.
- Be able to communicate in conversational French.
- Work collaboratively as a member of a small workplace team.
- Be able to stand and walk for extended periods as well as lift and carry moderate loads.
- Have a basic understanding of the history of Alberta, an interest in historical interpretation, as well as communication, creativity, and organizational skills.
- Provide proof of Standard First Aid certification and undergo a Vulnerable Sector security screening before hiring.
Other assets include: Customer service experience; experience with children and seniors; fluency in Indigenous languages; knowledge of Alberta’s Métis history and heritage skills (beadwork, finger weaving, spinning, etc.).
