Food Security & Social Innovation Assistant
Programs and Service DeliveryContractorToronto, ON$18.60 CAD per hour
Position Title: Food Security & Social Innovation Assistant
Position Overview:
This is a dynamic, hands-on opportunity for someone interested in business, nonprofit work, or community impact who wants to build real, transferable skills in a meaningful setting.
You’ll spend time inside the food bank operations to understand the full experience—from clients accessing support, to volunteers serving on the front lines, to food partners and student placements contributing to the system. This direct exposure will help you see why the program matters in practice, not just in theory.
A key part of the role is using these experiences to support the development of a more sustainable, social enterprise approach for Bread Night. This includes helping capture stories, volunteer experiences, and on-the-ground insights that demonstrate impact and help communicate the value of the program to donors, community groups, and paying participants.
You’ll help build a clearer picture of who should be engaging with the program, why they would contribute financially, and how to position Bread Night as both a community service and a sustainable funding model.
Key Responsibilities
1. Social Enterprise & Community Engagement (40%)
· Use your creativity to help enhance Bread Night, a weekly food recovery event that rescues surplus food and redistributes it to the community
· Promote Bread Night through platforms like Eventbrite with a new paid participation option
· Assist in creating simple engagement materials (flyers, signage, and thank-you packages) to make events welcoming, clear, and well-organized
· Help ensure each event runs smoothly and efficiently
2. Food Security & Client Experience (40%)
- Jump into the day-to-day flow of the food bank—leading volunteers with sorting, packing, and distributing food
- Help create a welcoming, respectful front-line experience where clients feel cared for and able to access food with dignity
- Support client intake and registration to ensure a smooth and organized service
- Help keep things running efficiently behind the scenes so service stays fast and consistent
3. Environmental Sustainability & Community Impact (20%)
- Work in our new Community Garden alongside partners from Christian Horizons, supporting people of diverse abilities in a shared outdoor space
- Be part of food recovery efforts through Second Harvest that actively reduce waste and redirect good food back into the community
- Support hands-on composting initiatives behind the food bank
Learning Outcomes:
· Gain hands-on experience in food bank operations, volunteer coordination, and client services
· Learn how social enterprise and fundraising strategies support nonprofit sustainability
· Develop skills in storytelling, outreach, and impact communication through real programs like Bread Night
· Build practical knowledge of food security systems and environmental sustainability practices
· Strengthen communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills in a community setting
Requirements:
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills
· Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment with diverse groups of people
· Organized, dependable, and able to take initiative
· Interest in community service, social enterprise, nonprofit work, or food security
· Willingness to learn and contribute to both operational and program development work
· Valid G2 licence and comfortable driving a cargo van
